EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – One week into the first season of spring practices under first-year head coach Scotty Walden, UTEP said on Monday that it likes the progress it’s made through the first four workouts.

It’s certainly a different feel around practice than the previous regime; Walden’s workouts are long and energetic, with an up-tempo approach enforced throughout the day.

That’s no doubt an adjustment for players that were under former UTEP head coach Dana Dimel, but for any new players currently getting integrated into the team and Walden’s style, the first week was a major adjustment period.

Monday was the Miners’ fourth workout of the spring under Walden and while it’s still very early in the process of getting ready for the 2024 season, Walden likes the progress the Miners have made already.

“We just have to get to the point to where we’re urgent and even if we don’t know what we’re doing, we go full speed,” Walden said. “This system and this culture is all about learning on the fly. I’ve been really encouraged by the attention to detail of this group.”

Added wide receiver Trey Goodman, who came with Walden to UTEP from Austin Peay: “People are coming out here pre-practice and they’ve got more of a mentality to attack, rather than not knowing what’s going on. The more confident you are the faster you move.”

UTEP will be back on the practice field on Wednesday for its fifth spring workout. The Miners will hold their spring game on April 20 at the Sun Bowl and it will be open to the public.
