Kroos’ sublime return suggests Nagelsmann’s decision might be a masterstroke

A first international appearance for VfB Stuttgart left-back Maximilian Mittelstadt.

A first international goal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz — choreographed by set-piece coach Mads Buttgereit — and the fastest-ever for Germany, coming just eight seconds in.

And a first win while keeping a clean sheet against a top football nation in seven years. France v Germany on Saturday night was packed with novelty as far as the visiting team were concerned. But the unexpectedly pleasant evening in Lyon was most memorable for the return of a very familiar sight.

As England auditions go, this was compelling from Jess Park.

The kind of performance that, 10 years ago, would have yielded a couple of thumbs up from Simon Cowell and been the water cooler moment on a Monday morning.

But this is 2024, and Park was playing to Sarina Wiegman with a screen test comprising two goals and an assist.

More than that, Park was the player upon whom City’s fortunes turned: the pocket rocket surging from the middle and exploding behind disorientated red shirts.

Argentina gets a glimpse of life without Messi in win over El Salvador

World Cup champions Argentina breezed past El Salvador on Friday night, topping the Central American team 3-0 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the first of their two friendlies in this international window.

But this match was less about winning for Argentina, and more about learning how to play without their biggest star, Lionel Messi, and making way for others to find their footing on the pitch as the team inches closer to defending their Copa America title this summer.

How did Argentina fare without Messi? Find out below

Arsenal's Women's Super League (WSL) fixture against Aston Villa has been delayed due to travel disruption affecting the north London club's arrival.

The game was due to kick off at 6.45 GMT but because of the issue, the game will now start at 7.30pm GMT.

Arsenal said in a statement that "we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to supporters by the late change in timings".

Jonas Eidevall's team are aiming to narrow the gap to six points behind second-placed Manchester City by securing a victory at Villa Park.

Barcelona’s Cancelo on Man City exit: ‘I think they were ungrateful to me’

Barcelona defender Joao Cancelo has denied allegations of a dressing room fallout during his time at Manchester City.

The Portugal international left City to join Bayern Munich on loan in January 2023. The Athletic reported that there was not one major flashpoint that led to his departure but rather a series of smaller incidents and a general pattern of behaviour that City saw as disruptive.

Defenders Rico Lewis and Nathan Ake were routinely picked ahead of Cancelo by Pep Guardiola, but the 29-year-old, who is on loan at Barcelona from City, says that accusations of a reported dispute with the two defenders after losing his place in the starting XI are untrue.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur says he has been playing with a broken toe.

The 26-year-old revealed the news while on international duty with Uruguay.

Bentancur featured for 25 minutes after coming off the bench in Uruguay's 1-1 draw against the Basque Country.

He said to Uruguayan outlet Polideportivo: "I have a broken little toe, but I can continue playing."

Bentancur returned to action earlier than expected in December, having recovered from an ankle injury.

Bailey’s fight with Jamaica’s football federation is a long-running family affair

There was one significant absentee as the USMNT beat Jamaica 3-1 after extra time on Thursday evening.

Leon Bailey, the Jamaican team’s born-and-bred star, had been left out of the squad by head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson for this month’s CONCACAF Nations League internationals.

Bailey is in the form of his life, having registered eight goals and eight assists for Aston Villa in 27 Premier League appearances this season. When news broke that he was not in the squad, fans roared in protest. Why would you leave out the nation’s best player?

Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick against Montpellier last weekend means he has scored 250 goals for Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions.

The landmark was reached in just 297 games, with the Frenchman’s first goal in PSG colours coming against Metz in Ligue 1 in September 2017 at the age of 18.

Mbappe, who will leave PSG this summer, is now the club’s record goalscorer. Whatever total he finishes on in May (or June, if they get to the Champions League final) is likely to stand for a long time.

Mourinho: 'I want to work in the summer'

Mourinho: 'I want to work in the summer'

Jose Mourinho says he is ready for a return to management this summer.

The 61-year-old is currently without a job after being sacked by Roma on January 16, with whom he won the Europa Conference League in 2022, their first silverware in 14 years.

Speaking at the Portuguese MotoGP, Mourinho emphasised he has no updates regarding job offers but stressed that he "wants to work".

He said, as quoted by Globo: "Zero, zero (news about my future). I don't have a club, I'm free. But I want to work in the (European) summer. I want to work."

Mourinho boasts an impressive record of 26 major trophies as a manager, including consecutive titles with Chelsea in 2005 and 2006 during Roman Abramovich’s ownership, followed by a treble-winning season at Inter Milan in 2011.

He secured the La Liga title with Real Madrid in 2012, another Premier League upon his return to Chelsea in 2015, and clinched the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017.

Kane and Saka’s absence underlined England have strength but not depth

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Brazil was a reminder of something that has been forgotten amid all of the bullishness about England’s attacking quality. Yes they have strength, but they still lack depth.

It is easy to get excited about the quality of players in theory available to Southgate next month. Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and Harry Kane are all in the form of their lives. The five of them have been among the most impressive players anywhere in the world this season. Alan Shearer has called them five of the best front six in world football. England have never gone into a major tournament being able to say that before.

But none of this means that England are in a position of impermeable strength. The pool of players is glistening in parts but ultimately shallow. Southgate came into this game with one third of his roughly 40-man longlist unavailable to him, saying that it was the worst injury crisis he had faced in his tenure. And this game underlined the very obvious point that if you remove just two key players for England, even their three superstars do not shine quite as brightly.

Endrick delivers a preview showing of history

If there is one thing you can say about Endrick, Brazil’s match-winner on a soporific spring night at Wembley, it is that he doesn’t hang around waiting. Timetables and calendars mean nothing to him. There are only two times on his internal clock: now and next.

Endrick was the standout player at Brazil’s biggest under-20 tournament at the age of 15. He made his senior debut for Palmeiras in October 2022, two months after his 16th birthday. By the end of that year, he had won a Brazilian championship medal — he has since added another to his collection — and signed for Real Madrid.

This was not his senior international debut. He came off the bench in a World Cup qualifier against Colombia in November and did so again against Argentina five days later. It was, however, his first ever match in Europe — an opportunity to formally introduce himself on what Brazilians call the old continent.

They say you only get one chance to make a first impression. Endrick buried his, following up after Vinicius Junior’s shot was saved by Jordan Pickford and knocking the ball into the empty net. It was no masterpiece but the sense of lift-off, of talent unshackled by the usual laws, was unmistakable.

It felt for all the world like a preview showing of history.

Gareth Southgate says Jordan Henderson and Cole Palmer have trained ahead of England's clash against Belgium on Tuesday.

The pair sat out of England's 1-0 defeat to Brazil on Saturday.

But if all goes according to plan, it is expected both players will be in contention to feature at Wembley next week.

Southgate said: "(Henderson and Palmer) trained today (Saturday) so they've come through that OK.

"They should join the group that will train tomorrow (Sunday) and we'll go from there with that."

Germany defeat a 'wake-up call' for France – Tchouameni

Germany defeat a 'wake-up call' for France – Tchouameni

Aurelien Tchouameni says France were "outclassed in every department" in their 2-0 defeat against Germany and argued the game should be a wake-up call for his nation.

Florian Wirtz netted Germany's quickest international goal after just seven seconds, followed by an early second-half strike from Kai Havertz to secure a victory for Germany against Didier Deschamps' France in Lyon. '

Tchouameni said to French TV network TF1: "I think we were outclassed in every department.

"We couldn't put our game plan in place. We came up against a great team. We need to do better, individually and collectively.

"It's a wake-up call, but there's no need to overreact either. We are aware of and confident in our qualities."

Kane to miss England's match vs Belgium with ankle injury

Kane to miss England's match vs Belgium with ankle injury

Gareth Southgate has confirmed that striker Harry Kane will miss England’s match against Belgium due to an ankle injury.

The England captain, 30, sat out of his nation’s 1-0 defeat against Brazil on Saturday due to the problem he picked up after colliding with a goalpost late on in Bayern Munich’s 5-2 Bundesliga win over Darmstadt on March 16.

Southgate had suggested before the Brazil encounter that Kane’s availability for Tuesday’s match was “extremely doubtful” and he has now confirmed the striker will return to Germany and undergo treatment.

Southgate said: "Yeah, he'll go back (to Germany). He won't be fit for Tuesday."

Nagelsmann: DFB president confirms discussions over potential contract extension

German Football Federation (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf says they are in discussions with national team coach Julian Nagelsmann over a potential contract extension.

Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig head coach, had been appointed as Germany’s national team manager last September on a contract that would end after this year’s European Championship.

Neuendorf spoke about Nagelsmann’s future following Germany’s impressive 2-0 win against France on Saturday.

He said to German outlet ZDF: “It would be absolutely desirable from our side (to extend Nagelsmann’s contract).

“We’re a good team, we get on well, we’re in intensive dialogue.”

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner expressed his disappointment following his side's 3-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City as he also voiced frustration over Jess Park's opening goal not being ruled out for offside.

A brace from Park and a goal from Khadija Shaw earned City all three points at Etihad Stadium.

Park's opening goal should have been disallowed for offside due to Shaw's involvement in the build-up. However, in the absence of a video assistant referee, the goal was allowed to stand.

Skinner told BBC Radio 5 Live after the game: "When I look back at the first goal it is offside, then we are in the game.

"All of a sudden they get a corner and they get momentum at home. It is not a goal (Jess Park's opening goal) and it shouldn't have stood.

"We had chances before that which we would have taken on another day, we were making Khiara Keating work way more than what Mary Earps is having to work.

"When I watch it back, it is disappointing losing a game as big as this."

City are next in action against Liverpool on March 30 while United face Everton on March 31.

Austria’s Christoph Baumgartner set a new record for the fastest goal in international football during a friendly against Slovakia on Saturday.

Just six seconds after the kick-off, the 24-year-old sprinted from the centre circle, evaded three challenges, and unleashed a low shot from outside the box into the bottom corner.

The away section erupted in celebration at the Tehelne pole stadium in Bratislava, while Slovakia’s home fans watched in disbelief.

Austria won the match 2-0.
