10 YEARS AGO | 2014

  • No one spoke on the proposed $87.9 million 2014-15 county budget that includes the school budget during a public hearing in Halifax. And only one person spoke during a public hearing on the 2014 reassessment that will require a 1-cent hike in the real estate tax rate to remain revenue neutral due to a drop in the assessed value of county real estate. Halifax County Board of Supervisors held the pair of public hearings at the Mary Bethune Office Complex in Halifax. The assessment decrease is resulting in a proposed penny increase in the real estate tax rate from 45 cents to 46 cents because the total assessed value of real property is less than last year’s total assessed value of real property by 1.51 percent.
  • General Manager of South Boston Speedway Cathy Rice glanced back and forth between two of her right-hand women, Helen Barksdale and Jenny Morris, as the speedway was announced the Business of the Year at the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce’s 59th annual meeting and banquet Tuesday evening. Fueled by surprise and excitement, Rice mouthed, “We just won,” to Barksdale and Morris. Patricia Ricketts, incoming chairman of the board, recognized the well-known track as a “steadfast supporter of the chamber and the community.” Ricketts took notice of their efforts to provide scholarships, host family events and attract national media attention with such achievements as hosting the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown Race for the first time on April 24.
  • The “open” flag is out at the Halifax County-South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Museum. Sports Hall Of Fame President Carlyle Wimbish Jr. said yesterday the museum, located on Route 58 adjacent to Boston Lumber Co. in Riverdale, is now open on weekends beginning this weekend, with Saturday hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday hours from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The museum opened its doors last weekend with a “quiet opening” and some people stopped by, Wimbish said. “We opened it last weekend to kind of test the waters,” Wimbish said.
