The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

 Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

  

Neighbors have snakes

March 8

4:26 a.m. A 25-year-old woman on Ohkay Bupingeh was unconscious and not breathing. One dose of Narcan was administered.

7:21 a.m. A man in a car was slumped over the steering wheel with a piece of foil at Goodwill. 

7:42 p.m. A caller reported there are several peacocks running loose in the area at South McCurdy Road and Fairview Lane.

8:12 a.m. A caller said there’s a vehicle parked at one of the pumps at Murphy’s Express and the people in the vehicle are smoking drugs.

9:04 a.m. A 39-year-old man on El Llano Road was unconscious and not breathing after taking heroin.

9:21 a.m. A Private Drive 1012 in Alcalde caller reported a man carrying a plastic bin hit her daughter with the bin twice and is now walking on the lower road toward Ohkay Owingeh.

10:06 a.m. A Medanales caller said a man in a vehicle is slumped over and they can’t wake him up. The Abiquiú Volunteer Fire Department was paged out and the man got a ride from a friend.

10:49 a.m. An Ohkay Bupingeh caller found her sister on the kitchen floor. She said the sister overdosed last night and the caller thinks she was smoking more. One dose of Narcan was administered.

2:15 p.m. A Mariscos la Playa caller reported a man is unconscious near the entrance of the restaurant. He was walking sideways before he sat down. Workers tried waking him up but he’s not responding.

2:42 p.m. A caller wants to file a report because her 11-year-old daughter was touched by another student who’s the same age. 

2:55 p.m. A student was in possession of a marijuana vape pen at the Española Middle School.

3:12 p.m. A woman on State Road 76 in Española said her husband pulled her hair, choked her, threatened to kill her and tried to rape her.

3:49 p.m. An Ohkay Casino caller said two men are drunk and refusing to leave.

5:14 p.m. A Walmart caller reported a man is lying on his stomach in the mens bathroom. They tried talking to him, but he’s not responding.

6:36 p.m. A 60-year-old man in Ohkay Owingeh was pushing his medical alarm, saying he wants the police to come to his house because his neighbors are in his front yard with snakes.

6:49 p.m. A caller reported a man walking toward AutoZone threw rocks at his car.

7:36 p.m. A caller said a truck drove into their yard and through a fence, causing damage.

7:46 p.m. A County Road 141 in Medanales caller reported there are lights in his sister’s house and it looks like they are flashing. He said his sister is with him and there shouldn’t be anyone in her house.

9:13 p.m. A Dixon caller said a snowplow hit a truck.

9:41 p.m. A State Road 30 in Santa Clara caller reported all the windows are broken on her vehicle.

10:40 p.m. A Ghost Ranch caller said they are staying in a cabin and are getting alerts about a gas leak and the power is off.

 

Seeing scorpions

March 9

12:03 a.m. A Speedway caller said a woman is panhandling.

12:27 a.m. An Española Hospital caller reported an incident, sexual in nature, occurred between 4-year-old and 10-year-old siblings.

1:58 a.m. A caller said a 35-year-old man on North Paseo de Oñate is hallucinating and seeing scorpions on him.

4:20 a.m. A caller on Middle San Pedro Road reported her husband shot someone after they were caught in the garage.

6:41 a.m. An Allsups caller said a man pumping gas is waving a gun. The reporting officer said the caller mistook a flashlight for a gun.

8:43 a.m. A woman was sleeping by the employee door at Century Bank. She was chased off the property but got aggressive with the caller. 

10:45 a.m. A Walmart caller said a couple was in the store throwing things around.

10:47 a.m. A man went to a house on Rincon de Estella to pick up his niece after not hearing from her and they were supposed to go get breakfast. Three men opened the door and had “white stuff” on their noses and pointed a gun at him.

12:53 p.m. A Fairview Lane caller’s 34-year-old cousin is withdrawing from fentanyl and alcohol and needs an ambulance.

12:53 p.m. A Private Drive 1536 in Hernandez caller has a court order against a woman and the woman keeps sending stuff to her phone, indicating she is going to harm her.

3:38 p.m. A North Coronado caller said a man and woman are in a yard, trying to kill dogs.

4:23 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported a 41-year-old man is unconscious. The Office of the Medical Investigator was called.

6:45 p.m. A County Road 142 in Medanales caller reported her mother came over to their house and is drunk. The mother pushed the caller’s 81-year-old aunt.

7:35 p.m. A Rincon de Estella caller said someone shot at her window and damaged it.

8:41 p.m. An El Rito caller reported her daughter was fighting with her son’s girlfriend, so the son got in his sister’s face and pushed her.

 

No OD, just drunk

March 10

4:59 a.m. A La Fonda del Sol caller saw on surveillance footage, someone taking items from inside the restaurant.

8:19 a.m. A County Road 18 in Española caller said someone broke into his property and damaged his motorcycle.

9:37 a.m. A First Baptist Church caller wants the person who pitched a tent in the parking lot to leave.

10:45 a.m. A catalytic converter was taken off a Toyota Prius on North Paseo de Oñate.

11:20 a.m. A 58-year-old woman in Hernandez was unconscious and didn’t have a pulse. The Office of the Medical Investigator was called.

12:51 p.m. A North McCurdy Road caller said a homeless woman across from his property is carrying a small ax.

1:55 p.m. A man was unconscious on Calle Redonda. One dose of Narcan was administered.

2:46 p.m. A death was reported in Hernandez.

3:45 p.m. A criminal summons was issued to a man in Lyden because he allegedly shot his neighbor’s dog.

6:35 p.m. A man in Ojo Caliente was drunk and got arrested for battery on a household member.

7:26 p.m. A caller said he went to Dollar General in Hernandez but the store was closed. A man was there and walked up to him and began talking about stuff that didn’t make sense. There was also a black car there and the men inside wouldn’t let the caller get near the store.

8:03 a.m. A West Calle Rosario caller reported a vehicle has been driving around their neighborhood, lurking.

8:20 p.m. An Española Pathways Shelter caller said a man is very drunk and they want him to leave.

8:41 p.m. A caller reported a man pulled a gun on a group of people hanging out at Valdez Park.

10:17 p.m. A caller said a 42-year-old man on Cedar Avenue and Pine Avenue in Chama may have overdosed. The caller phoned again and said the man woke up and is just really drunk.

11:35 p.m. A Las Lomas Apartments caller reported homeless people are getting trash from the dumpsters and trying to get under the gate.

 

Assault at a funeral

March 11

2:47 a.m. A Calle Loma caller said a man was on her porch and tried to take a bike and a dog cage. They yelled at him and he ran off.

7:29 a.m. A Pizza Hut caller reported a campfire was started next to the parking lot, in the grass area. They want someone put it out.

12:32 p.m. A caller said she takes care of her grandmother at the Villa del Norte Apartments and when she goes there, the neighbor comes out and yells and tries to key her car. She wants to speak with an officer.

1:25 p.m. A County Road 87 caller wants to speak with a deputy about an assault that happened several days ago at the cemetery in Chimayó, during a funeral.

1:42 p.m. A driver fled a traffic stop and people in the vehicle were throwing out baggies during the pursuit. 

2:36 p.m. A caller saw their stolen trailer at Lowe’s Home Improvement.

6:09 p.m. A North McCurdy Road caller said two men are walking in the ditch, looking at houses.

8:12 p.m. A Walgreens caller reported a man is hanging around the doors and asking people to buy him alcohol.

 

Scaring children

March 12

1:48 a.m. A man in his 30s was possibly overdosing at the homeless shelter. Narcan was administered.

1:57 a.m. A 41-year-old man was drunk, being disorderly and started a fire near the Santa Cruz Country Store.

10:11 a.m. A FedEx caller was making a delivery to the old Italian Fusion building and said the door was wide open. A responding officer said there was minor damage to the door.

10:47 a.m. A McDonald’s caller said a man and woman are sleeping in a vehicle in the front parking lot and a homeless person is panhandling in the parking lot. 

11:07 a.m. A Villa del Norte Apartments caller wants to speak with an officer about a break-in that occurred in an apartment.

12:12 p.m. A caller reported an altercation between a man and a woman on North Riverside Drive. The man was charged with concealing his identity and was arrested.

12:44 p.m. An El Rey Liquors caller said a person was robbed at gunpoint.

1:02 p.m. A man went to EPD to report his gun was stolen from his vehicle outside Rivera Family Funeral Home.

1:31 p.m. An El Rito caller said a person is lying on the side of the road and requested an ambulance.

2:27 p.m. A Private Drive 1012 in Alcalde caller reported a man broke the window on his vehicle.

2:28 p.m. A Calle Don Felix caller said they found human teeth and part of a jaw in a truck. The Office of the Medical Investigator was called, but the items might be sheep remains.

5:15 p.m. A Private Drive 1618B in Medanales caller reported his children are playing outside and there’s a woman outside his gate, staring at the children and frightening them.

7:59 p.m. An Alfred Lane caller said six people are on the property, breaking glass. 

9:53 p.m. A La Cocina caller reported her car is gone.

11:50 p.m. A very drunk man was fighting people in Speedway.

 

Turn off the lights

March 13

1:26 a.m. A 64-year-old man in Hernandez was unconscious and not responding after possibly doing cocaine earlier.

2:13 a.m. A caller said six people behind the Bond House were beating up a woman.

6:01 a.m. A Hernandez caller reported a man is kicking her door. The man got in the house and was in the bathroom with the woman’s roommate. The man said if deputies went in, he’d hurt the woman.

9:25 a.m. An AutoZone delivery driver said a homeless person threw a rock and broke his window as he was passing Valdez Bridge.

9:31 a.m. A Santa Clara caller requested an ambulance for a younger female to be checked out for possible mental illness.

9:39 a.m. An Española Pathways Shelter caller wants help with a tent eviction. The caller said the person violated the shelter tent policy by starting fires and has a stovetop in the tent.

9:52 a.m. A man went to EPD to speak with an officer about a homeless person who’s sleeping on top of Center Market and starting fires on the roof.

11:34 a.m. A Hoy Recovery caller reported a 60-year-old man is very drunk, irate and refusing to leave. 

11:43 a.m. A Po Pay Avenue caller said a passenger on a Blue Bus is irate and causing problems for other passengers.

12:41 p.m. A woman wants to file a report for a stolen Century Bank check.

1:04 p.m. A caller said his F-250 on County Road 366 and County Road 496 is fully engulfed in flames; the cab melted off and the tires are on fire.

1:10 p.m. An Allsups caller reported a man has been staring at female employees for 20 minutes.

2:19 p.m. A walk-in report for fraud was taken at the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office.

2:54 p.m. An Abiquiú caller reported her 19-year-old son is outside breaking her windows. He had been in the house and was throwing a tantrum.  

3:06 p.m. A woman went to EPD to file a report because money was taken out of her car at Walmart.

3:07 p.m. A man was slumped over the wheel of a vehicle at Walgreens.

5:51 p.m. A La Mesilla caller said her sister has mental illness and has been having recurring breakdowns. She received a call that her sister had a gun and was trying to go onto the Taos reservation yesterday, but fled before police showed up. The caller is requesting a welfare check on her sister.

5:57 p.m. A caller on Calle Hacienda called 911 and was mumbling to a man that she is wearing wet clothes, has blues, meth and $200 to sell for dry clothes and a place to stay.

6:01 p.m. An East Montana Vista caller reported three guys went into a vacant house.

6:51 p.m. A call was placed to 911 from a caller on Private Drive 1056 in Alcalde. The line was open and a man and woman were heard cussing at each other. 

7:46 p.m. A woman returned to her house on Paseo de Paulina and said her door is locked. She said the door can only be locked from the inside, so she thinks someone might be inside and passed out. An officer helped her open the door but there was no one inside.

10:11 p.m. A County Road 1 in Hernandez caller reported the neighbors have light all over his porch and backyard and it’s hard to go to sleep.

 

Bad influence

March 14

10:18 a.m. An Alcalde caller said a pitbull tried attacking her and her dogs. She thinks the dog might have rabies.

11:58 a.m. A Velarde caller reported two men showed up at his house and threatened his 11-year-old and 20-year-old cousins. He said the men had assault rifles with them.

1:42 p.m. A Lamb Street caller said her husband received a phone call on which a young girl was screaming in the background. She has checked on her children and grandchildren and they are fine. The call came from a restricted number.

2:13 p.m. A rolling domestic occurred between a couple on their way to Texas from Colorado. After speaking with a deputy, they agreed to continue the trip to Texas together.

3:09 p.m. A woman on Sandy Lane said she had a restraining order on a woman who is at her house.

3:28 p.m. A Woods Lane caller reported a vehicle is parked at the top of the road and there’s a man and woman inside. 

3:41 p.m. A deputy requested an ambulance for a drunk man at McDonald’s.

4:08 p.m. A man on County Road 140 in Medanales cut off his ankle monitor.

5:12 p.m. A caller said her husband is in a car with a man who won’t let him out of the vehicle. They are heading toward La Joya Street.

5:27 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported a man was sitting front of her gate, so she told him to leave. He got irate and began yelling at her. When her husband came out, the man started yelling at him, too. The caller is requesting courtesy rounds.

6:08 p.m. An officer was flagged down near Española Pathways Shelter regarding a possibly stolen generator.

6:26 p.m. A County Road 5 caller reported people are trying to get into his house. They are saying they’re with CYFD but are in personal vehicles.

  6:28 p.m. An Ojo Caliente caller said his neighbor shot his dog and the dog ran off.

7:28 p.m. A caller reported a man is possibly overdosing in a vehicle in Tierra Amarilla. TA EMS responded and it was determined the man ran out of gas and was taking a nap.

8:22 p.m. A manager at Center Market wants to speak with an officer because people are climbing on the roof and starting fires.

8:27 p.m. A Calle Duran caller reported the neighbor has been threatening their 6-, 7- and 11-year-old children

10:23 p.m. A La Mesilla caller said the neighbor on the next road over has a fire on the fence that has reached 2-3 feet high.

10:56 p.m. A caller reported a man has her husband in a car. She doesn’t want to report him missing, but she wants to see if officers can find the vehicle they are in.

 1:23 p.m. The caller from the previous call said she’s by the high school and is looking for her husband. She wants an officer to tell the man to come home because the man he’s with is a bad influence.
