Fort Smith Police: Scam caller reportedly impersonated an attorney, asked for money

The victim was asked for money in exchange for the release of the family member.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) is warning the public of a scam they have been notified of. 

FSPD said a victim received a phone call from someone impersonating an attorney. According to officials, the victim was told that one of their family members "was in an accident and had been arrested."

The victim was asked for money in exchange for the release of the allegedly incarcerated family member. 

FSPD assures the public that "reputable attorneys will not engage in this type of conduct." Anyone who receives these calls are asked to report them to the FSPD at 479-709-5000.
