The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

 Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

  

Pistol-packing at Wendy’s

March 1

9:15 a.m. A patient left from a home and threatened to jump in front of a vehicle on El Llano Road and North McCurdy Road.

10:48 a.m. A woman wants to file a report because her computer was stolen from her vehicle on Camino de Carlos.

10:59 a.m. A man and a woman were panhandling at Murphy’s Express.

11:02 a.m. A woman went to the Española Police Department to file a report for the theft of her EBT card.

11:03 a.m. A South McCurdy Court caller wants officers to remove his daughter’s boyfriend from the house.

11:27 a.m. A Coyote caller said a man is yelling and pointing a gun at the caller.

11:58 a.m. A Starlighter Loop caller reported a man with schizophrenia is trying to hit his father and is punching himself in the face; he’s also delusional.

2 p.m. A walk-in report was taken at EPD because a man’s credit card was used at Lowe’s Home Improvement twice.

2:18 p.m. A RAC Stop caller found some foil and other items on a man who’s on probation. 

2:51 p.m. A welfare check was conducted on a man on East Pueblo Street because his sister had not heard from him since before Christmas. Officers and medics had to force entry into the house, where they found the man dead.

3:35 p.m. A caller reported a man is between Wendy’s and Walmart and cannot get up.

4:13 p.m. A North Calle de Amor caller said there’s a breaking-and-entering in progress and her father-in-law might be on drugs and is hurting their dogs. 

4:59 p.m. A caller on Camino de Roberto reported her mother might be overdosing on fentanyl. Three doses of Narcan were administered.

7:22 p.m. A Po Pay Avenue caller reported a man against whom she has a restraining order was in her yard, staring at her house.

8:06 p.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller said a man stole six strips of vinyl flooring and got into a vehicle with a man.

8:46 p.m. A China Kitchen caller reported an off-duty employee is at the Days Inn and has been drinking.

9:24 p.m. A Rodeway Inn caller said an ex-employee is fighting with a current employee.

9:31 p.m. A caller reported someone across from Home Run Pizza in Alcalde made a U-turn and hit the stop sign. The man seems to be under the influence and is bleeding from the face.

9:55 p.m. A Wendy’s caller said a man has a pistol and is driving around the parking lot. The caller also said one shot was fired.

Kicked off the bus

March 2

12:03 a.m. A caller heard two gunshots near the Vista del Rio Apartments.

7:54 a.m. A couple of children on Calle Duran called 911 several times, asking if their uncle is in jail.

9:28 a.m. An RTD office building caller said a woman is very drunk and refusing to leave. She’s also yelling at staff members after she was kicked off the bus because she was being disruptive.

11:11 a.m. A man was going from house to house, on Lower San Pedro Road, checking to see if doors were open.

12:41 p.m. A State Road 76 in Chimayó caller reported a vehicle hit a tree. A second caller said the vehicle hit a gas meter.

12:50 p.m. An El Llano Road caller wants to speak with an officer because he found a bullet home in his house and heard shots being fired last night.

1:36 p.m. A West Winesap Drive caller said a man is holding what might be a gun.

1:40 p.m. A woman on Private Drive 1535 in Hernandez reported her son drank and was smoking wax, now he’s having trouble breathing.

2:55 p.m. A Cook Street caller noticed her house was broken into.

4:32 p.m. A man was reported as being down at the Ohkay Travel Center. He was transported to the emergency room.

4:49 p.m. A Walgreens caller said a man is in the dumpster, arguing with employees who are trying to get him to leave.

4:51 p.m. A Burger King caller reported a man is hitting people and causing a scene.

5:03 p.m. A deputy pursued a vehicle in Medanales that passed him at 95 mph.

5:07 p.m. A Center Market caller said customers are angry with a cashier and are yelling at him because he is trying to close the store.

6:02 p.m. A woman was reported to be on the floor of a home on North Railroad Avenue. The caller can see her through a window.

6:07 p.m. A Calle Ranchitos caller wants to report a stolen gun.

7:09 p.m. A Walmart caller said two men are fighting in the parking lot and one man was on the ground.

8:34 p.m. A Walmart caller can hear people yelling behind the store and they are worried there’s a fight.

10:09 p.m. An Española Pathways Shelter caller said a man is lying outside and said it hurts to breathe.

10:54 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported a woman attacked her, broke her phone, then left.

 

Dumpster diving

March 3

12:26 a.m. A man was crossing the street near McDonald’s and a 13-year-old girl told him she’d been shot in the stomach.

1:04 a.m. An Allsups caller said a man keeps jumping in the dumpster and taking trash out. He’s been asked to leave but keeps doing it.

2:20 a.m. Deputies pursued a vehicle in Alcalde.

9:15 a.m. A Family Dollar in Española caller reported the store is not opening today, but there are 50 people outside, banging on the doors. The caller wants an officer to help. The responding officer said the crowd appeared calm when he arrived. The district manager called and said the store is in the process of shutting down permanently, so the hours will fluctuate.

10:07 a.m. A woman was walking near Burger King, with no pants on.

10:57 a.m. A deputy was waved down by a woman who told him her daughter is texting that she needs help.

11:35 a.m. A Calle de la Paz caller reported her nephew’s car was recently recovered after being stolen and they just noticed there’s a bullet hole in the windshield.

11:36 a.m. An 75-year-old man in Ohkay Owingeh was reportedly unconscious and “not doing well.”

2:15 p.m. A caller said a car is parked near his parent’s house and before that, they were driving around, casing the area.

2:32 p.m. A Truchas caller can hear someone shooting in the area.

4:59 p.m. A Calle Duran caller wants to press charges on children who were beating up her children.

5:18 p.m. A Chamita caller said she needs to speak with New Mexico State Police because someone keeps coming by and stealing her items.

6:43 p.m. An Angel Duran Drive caller reported a man is sitting on her porch, talking to himself.

8:02 p.m. A County Road 203 in Abiquiú caller reported someone is in her sister’s house and the sister is not at home.

8:56 p.m. A Las Lomas Apartments caller wants to speak with an officer because someone has been harassing her periodically.

 

Cop saves cow

March 4

12:04 a.m. A Birch Lane caller said a man broke into her house, threatened to kill her, slapped her and said he’s the devil.

 2:26 a.m. A deputy shot and killed a dog in Medanales after he saw it and a pack of other dogs mauling a livestock cow. He initially tried to scare the dogs off by honking the horn and sounding the siren on his patrol vehicle, but when that failed, he shot one dog, which caused the rest to run away. The cow was mangled, but was expected to survive.

2:33 a.m. A Speedway caller reported a woman went into the store and a man hit her in the face with a bat.

4:16 a.m. An Española Hospital caller said a woman was discharged but is in the lobby, threatening another patient.

6:18 a.m. An El Llano Road caller requested a welfare check on her ex-husband, who is on some type of drugs and is acting strange.

6:31 a.m. A Cook Street caller said a man is walking back and forth on the street, talking to himself and they think he’s carrying a rifle or some type of weapon.

8:57 a.m. A Family Dollar caller reported they are opening the store at 9 a.m. and there’s a large crowd gathering.

10:19 a.m. A Calle del Rio caller wants to file a report because her bank account was compromised and money was taken.

 11:52 a.m. An Española Valley High School caller said a fight happened on Friday between two students and the caller wants to file a report.

12:22 p.m. A caller wants an officer to tell her 17-year-old daughter to come home because she hasn’t been there since last week.

12:32 p.m. A Carr Lane caller said her daughter is drunk and knocking on the door. The mother has a protection order against the daughter and she’s not supposed to be there.

12:56 p.m. A man was undressing in the middle of the road near Wells Fargo Bank.

2:04 p.m. A county employee called to report a couple of people are on the roof of the Oñate Center in Alcalde, stealing batteries.

2:50 p.m. A caller said two men are arguing and fighting near Calle del Rio and North Railroad Avenue.

5:12 p.m. A Lindrith caller reported a 17- or 18-year-old came to her house and is harassing her and sending pictures of her driveway. He is demanding to see her boyfriend, but he doesn’t live there and the man doesn’t believe her.

8:48 p.m. A death notification was delivered to a home on Private Drive 1600A in Hernandez.

9:52 p.m. A deputy pursued a vehicle beginning near Echo Canyon Amphitheater.

 

Two-week binge

March 5

9:44 a.m. An officer went to Magistrate Court because a call was placed, reporting that a man was being threatening. Additional units were requested because the man was thought to be possibly armed and dangerous.

10:28 a.m. A student was in possession of a THC pen at the Española Middle School.

10:30 a.m. An officer stopped off to tell a jaywalker near Goodwill to stay out of the streets.

10:50 a.m. An Española Transit caller reported the building was broken into and vandalized.

11:11 a.m. A woman said a man at Lucero Center is recording her and she wants to speak with an officer. The responding officer told the woman that the man can record in public.

11:23 a.m. A sixth-grade student threatened to take a gun to Fairview Elementary and shoot the teacher. 

11:29 a.m. A Fairview Lane caller wants a man trespassed from the area because he keeps trying to break into the trailers at the trailer park.

1:20 p.m. A County Road 87 in Chimayó caller is getting phone calls about a girl crying hysterically, saying “mom help me.” When the caller asks for the girl’s name, a man gets on the phone.

1:30 p.m. A Walmart caller said a man is harassing an employee by touching her inappropriately.

1:57 p.m. A woman was possibly overdosing on El Llano Road. She was not conscious or breathing and two doses of Narcan were administered, but the woman died.

3:15 p.m. A County Road 1 in Hernandez caller said two men are fighting and yelling.

4:32 p.m. A Pizza Hut caller reported a man is trying to fight other people by the shed behind the business.

4:39 p.m. A State Road 369 in Española caller said her 39-year-old niece is passed out in her vehicle and she might be having a mental breakdown.

5:42 p.m. Drug paraphernalia was found at one of the slot machines at the Ohkay Casino.

6 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on an older man who’s crawling on the side of the road in Alcalde. The caller said he seems disoriented.

6:02 p.m. An Ohkay Casino caller said security detained a woman with drug paraphernalia.

6:43 p.m. A 31-year-old man in Abiquiú was binge drinking for two weeks straight and called 911 to say he thinks he’s dying.

7:07 p.m. A caller thinks employees at Food King took his wallet that has his money and driver’s license in it.

11:02 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on her daughter in El Rito, who called and said her father is being aggressive with her, her sibling and her grandmother. He was threatening to hit them with a piece of wood.

11:51 p.m. A man was arrested on outstanding warrants after he tried to flee a police officer on Las Vegas Street. The officer stopped to check on a vehicle parked in the  middle of the road and that’s when the man attempted to flee.

 

Naked and screaming

March 6

2:34 a.m. An El Rito caller said her sister is hallucinating and thinks there are police outside.

4:30 a.m. A Rutheron caller reported her 29-year-old boyfriend is hot and cold and in and out of consciousness after consuming four shots of alcohol.

4:52 a.m. A Private Drive 1517 in Hernandez caller said a woman in a trailer is on the floor and not responding but suddenly starts screaming.

8:46 a.m. A Camino Cielo Grande caller said dogs tore up the skirting on his trailer as they were chasing a cat. He wants the dog’s owner to pay for the damage if they can be found.

9:35 a.m. A County Road 135 in Hernandez caller reported her neighbor’s 27-year-old son does fentanyl and he’s unconscious and not breathing. One dose of Narcan was administered but the man was cold to the touch. The Office of the Medical Investigator was called.

10:02 a.m. A Lotaburger caller said the walk-in cooler was broken from the outside and Itsa patties and shake mix were stolen.

10:26 a.m. A Cook’s Mobile Home Park caller reported the window on their vehicle was broken.

11:17 a.m. A La Mesilla caller said her tenant came home from getting groceries and a woman went toward her with a metal rod and threatened her.

12:35 p.m. An Alcalde caller reported her 67-year-old patient is on cocaine and is a danger to herself. She turned her oxygen on while lighting a cigarette.

 12:40 p.m. A La Mesilla caller said her neighbor’s tenant went down the road disrobed and screaming.

1:06 p.m. A caller reported a man is picking up trash bags on the side of State Road 76.

1:14 p.m. A caller was attacked by his father while at work. He said his father walked into his workplace and punched him in the face multiple times before leaving.

1:27 p.m. A Smoker’s Choice caller said a woman hit the doors with her car and broke them.

1:42 p.m. A Dixon caller reported a father and daughter are trying to break into a locked gate on the property.

2:07 p.m. A man was arguing with a Walgreens employee.

2:16 p.m. A woman reported her home in Alcalde was broken into last night. Nothing was taken, but the sliding glass door was broken.

2:22 p.m. A man was found dead in his Lumberton home after another man was unable to make contact with him and called the police.

3:08 p.m. A Walmart caller said a man with a man bun is talking to himself about assaulting children and other people and he keeps walking in and out of the store.

3:58 p.m. A caller reported her father was physically assaulted at Speedway and the men took his phone.

5:34 p.m. A caller reported someone in a truck and someone in a car were arguing by Union Hall and one of the people had a stick in their hand.

6:07 p.m. A Starbucks caller said a homeless man is loitering in the drive-thru and they want an officer to respond.

6:59 p.m. A hit-and-run was reported at China Kitchen.

7:02 p.m. An officer was waved down by a man at Napa Auto Parts and told that there are a bunch of squatters at the man’s house.

7:25 p.m. A Freddy’s caller requested a welfare check on a man who’s lying in front of the building.

9:42 p.m. A caller reported hitting a jaywalker in Alcalde with the corner of his truck. He checked on the man who was not breathing and had no pulse. The Office of the Medical Investigator was called.

11:02 p.m. A State Road 76 in Chimayó caller said a man is in the middle of the road and isn’t moving. The call was transferred to New Mexico State Police.

 

Threatening mom

March 7

12:01 a.m. An officer stopped to check on a man who was walking all over the roadway near Starbucks.

4:40 a.m. A caller reported there were four men in the football field area, close to the Pre-K building at McCurdy School.

8:18 a.m. A Goodwill caller said a vehicle with a dog has been parked there for two days and the person it belongs to has been asked to leave numerous times, but refuses.

9:52 a.m. A caller reported a woman is lying on the floor at a home on Lower San Pedro Road and Middle San Pedro Road.

10:08 a.m. A County Road 20 in Española caller is receiving threatening phone calls from her son. She said he also shows up and demands money. She wants to speak with an officer.

10:28 a.m. A city employee said he picks up trash for the city and homeless people on Calle Borrego are getting into the trash and throwing it on the street.

12:10 p.m. A deputy was flagged down by a man in El Rito who said a juvenile came at him with a rock.

2:34 p.m. An Española Valley High School caller reported a man is in the office looking for his girlfriend, who’s a student there. The caller said the man was arrested last week and he shouldn’t be at the school.

2:58 p.m. A 41-year-old man at Allsups said his insides were hurting. When asked if he did any drugs or drank alcohol, he hung up.

4:41 p.m. A Fairview Lane caller reported his sister’s grill was stolen last night and she sees it under the Valdez Bridge, at the homeless encampment.

5:55 p.m. A Private Drive 1512 in Hernandez caller said her nephew broke into her house and has been staying there while she was in the hospital. She wants him removed.

6:17 p.m. The man at Allsups from a previous call called back and said he needs an ambulance and is sitting by the bus stop.

7:51 p.m. An officer was flagged down at the Champion Carwash because two unwanted people were going through the trash cans.

8:52 p.m. A County Road 88 in Chimayó caller reported hearing a woman screaming along with other people. The caller is requesting a courtesy patrol.
