Griffin Schutz finished with four goals and two assists to tie his career high of six points and lead the No. 4 Virginia men’s lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over No. 5 Maryland in front of 7,845 fans at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland.
The win was the Cavaliers’ first in the series since defeating the Terrapins in the 2021 NCAA championship game.
“What a fantastic atmosphere to compete in,” Virginia coach Lars Tiffany said. “Does it feel like playoff lacrosse? Or maybe that’s because Maryland and Virginia play often in the NCAA Tournament — three of the last four years. But just an intense crowd, two great teams getting after it, and we were fortunate to come out ahead this time.”
The Hoos forced 16 Maryland turnovers while committing just eight themselves and buried both of their man-up chances. Maryland (5-2) held a 16-12 edge at the faceoff X, but Virginia (6-1) won the ground-ball battle, 29-22.
