Hazel Haarberg, Kearney Catholic: Husker quarterback Heinrich Haarberg’s sister, injured for last year’s state meet, began her sophomore season with times of 12.39 in the 100 and 25.34 in the 200 at the Minden Early Bird.
Laney Songster, Lincoln Northeast: Staked an early claim as this season’s top girls high hurdler with a 14.57 at the Elkhorn South meet.
Zaidah Lightener, Papillion-La Vista South: Is within an inch of cracking the all-time chart for the long jump after reaching 19-4¾ at the CSM indoor meet.
BOYS
Reece Grosserode, Lincoln Pius X: Class A’s state record holder in the triple jump (49-½ at the 2022 state meet) improved his personal record to 49-8 at the Doane Indoor. Because it was not made outdoors, the NSAA has it on hold as a record — although Gale Sayers’ record long jump and the jump by Bellevue East’s Robert Rands that broke it both were made indoors.
Jaxon Knisley, North Platte St. Patrick’s The returning Class C champion ran the fifth-fastest set of 110 hurdles in electronic timing with a 14.04 at the St. Pat’s/Hershey Invite.
Roe Patton, Fullerton: Last year’s Class D pole vault champion at 14-6 took his personal record to 15-0 at the Merrick County Invite.
Easton Fries, Chase County: Last year’s Class C 300 hurdles champion, came within .10 seconds of his best mark before last year’s state meet at the Perkins County Pre-Season with a 39.62.
Tory Pittman, Omaha Central: The freshman bears watching after uncorking a 22-10 long jump at the Omaha North junior varsity meet. All marks in high school competition, regards of level, are considered for The World-Herald’s season charts.
Trent Uhlir, Battle Creek: Husker football walk-on took third at the Nike Indoor Nationals in the shot at 61-7, a mark that does not count for the charts because it was before the season.
Carter Nelson, Ainsworth: Husker football signee cleared 14-8 in the vault at the Dan Lennon indoor meet.
