The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 5 Ups & 5 Downs From "Become"

7. Down: It's Mostly Filler

The Ones Who Live
AMC

Over the years, The Walking Dead has had many episodes like "Become," filler episodes that follow two or more characters on the road after a particularly calamitous hour, settling themselves and the show into a familiar rhythm.

Some of these are very good (see season five's excellent "Them"), but most are like "Become," which wants to bring its characters into an hour that makes audiences comfortable, cocooned in the warm embrace of familiarity and predictability.

Again, not all of this is bad, but it's hard to watch a show that has taken so many risks so far - with Rick's mental health, Michonne's gas-attack sickness - revert to type like this, especially when you realise everything its characters are saying has been said before, and is only being said again to set up next week's finale.

The Walking Dead loves a good bit of filler, and this is one of its most ponderous examples. It's good to have Richonne back, Jadis is compelling, but this spinoff has nothing left to say.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
