A Troy man who injured a child when he hit her with his car has been sentenced.

As ordered by Oakland County Circuit Judge Michael Warren, Raed Abdalla will spend 365 days in jail for the May 13, 2023 incident that happened as the 7-year-old girl rode her bike through the intersection of Silverstone Drive and Dryden Road in Troy.

Abdalla fled the scene but was arrested more than a month later at his family’s home in Dearborn.

The child suffered a broken femur, broken pelvis and severe abrasions, police said.

Abdalla, 28, was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing injuries, which he pleaded no contest to last month. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes. It can also offer some protection in civil cases.

Abdalla had faced up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

At his sentencing hearing on Wednesday, Abdalla was given credit for 31 days already served in jail. After he completes his year in jail, he’ll be on probation for three years, the judge said.

According to Troy police, the vehicle in the crash was identified by witnesses in the neighborhood familiar with it. Roseville police located the vehicle within 45 minutes of the crash after officers learned of Abdalla’s connection with a used car dealership in Roseville — but it would be several weeks before police caught up with him.

Abdalla, who had been out of custody after posting bond last July, was booked back into the Oakland County Jail late Wednesday afternoon.
