ACC baseball power rankings: Clemson overtakes Duke for No. 1 after weekend series win

After five weeks of ACC baseball, Florida State is the only undefeated team in the country. The Seminoles have a 19-0 record and are four games shy of tying the best start in program history.

Every team faced a conference opponent in Week 5 with the must-see matchup being a top-10 battle between Clemson and Duke. The Tigers won the weekend series 2-1 in Durham, North Carolina, which has shifted this week's power rankings.

Here's where every ACC team ranks five weeks into the season (Records and rankings are as of March 19).

1. Clemson (18-2, 2-1)

Last week: 2

What to know: The No. 5 Tigers suffered their first road loss Friday against the Blue Devils, but they rebounded to take the series. Clemson held off a late five-run rally from Duke on Saturday to tie the series, then won 8-6 Sunday after throwing out the potential winning run at home to end the ninth inning and hitting two homers in the 10th. Clemson will host undefeated FSU this weekend.

2. Duke (16-5, 3-3)

Last week: 1

What to know: The ninth-ranked Blue Devils lost their first series of the season to the Tigers. Ace Jonathan Santucci shined in the series opener, logging 11 strikeouts and two hits across five innings of two-run ball (one earned). Duke nearly won the series Sunday, but Alex Stone was thrown out at home plate in the ninth. The Blue Devils will look to bounce back vs. NC State this weekend.

3. Virginia (17-4, 3-3)

Last week: 7

What to know: Powered by their slugging, the No. 11 Cavaliers took down Wake Forest 2-1 in their weekend series. They scored 30 runs, highlighted by Jacob Ference' hitting's three home runs. Het hit two of them in the finale, which went into extra innings. Virginia will look to keep its offense hot when it battles Pittsburgh this weekend.

4. Wake Forest (14-6, 2-4)

Last week: 3

What to know: The No. 14 Demon Deacons blew late leads on Friday and Sunday to drop their series against Virginia. They gave up a 10-7 lead in the sixth inning Friday, then a 10-5 lead in the seventh Sunday. Chase Burns, who won ACC pitcher of the week, had a strong showing Saturday, striking out 13 during seven innings of one-run ball. Wake aims to bounce back vs. Louisville this weekend.

5. Florida State (19-0, 3-0)

Last week: 5

What to know: The No. 12 Seminoles' 19-0 start is the second best in school history. They swept Notre Dame in their first conference series, winning narrowly in the final two games. FSU has the best ERA (2.79) and batting average (.356) in the ACC.

6. North Carolina (18-4, 4-2)

Last week: 4

What to know: The No. 17 Tar Heels swept their midweek series vs. Rutgers then dropped the weekend series 2-1 against Miami. Both teams traded blowout victories, but the Hurricanes' 2-1 walk-off victory Saturday was enough for UNC to lose the series. It will continue conference play this weekend, hosting Georgia Tech.

7. Virginia Tech (15-4, 5-1)

Last week: 8

What to know: The Hokies' 2-1 series win over Louisville was their first in Louisville, Kentucky, since 1995. Carson DeMartini won ACC player of the week honors after going 7-for-12 with five home runs and seven RBIs against the Cardinals. Virginia Tech travels to Boston College this weekend.

8. Georgia Tech (16-4, 3-0)

Last week: 9

What to know: The Yellow Jackets are on a nine-game win streak after sweeping NC State over the weekend and defeating Georgia State 6-4 Tuesday. During their streak, they are outscoring their opponents 112-46. Freshman Drew Buress, who hit three homers against the Wolfpack, is third in the nation in home runs with 13.

9. NC State (13-6, 3-3)

Last week: 6

What to know: The Wolfpack were swept by Georgia Tech over the weekend but rebounded with a notable 9-8 midweek win against No. 15 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday. Garrett Pennington hit a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning vs. the Chanticleers. Still, their starters struggled in each game, allowing at least three runs.

10. Miami (12-8, 4-2)

Last week: 11

What to know: The Hurricanes won their second ACC series, taking down North Carolina 2-1. On Friday, they routed the Tar Heels 14-1 behind Ziehl Gage's six-strikeout outing. Dorian Gonzalez Jr. crushed a walk-off home run to left-center field Saturday to lift Miami to a 2-1 win. The Hurricanes will travel to Notre Dame for a three-game series this weekend.

11. Boston College (11-8, 2-4)

Last week: 14

What to know: The Eagles had an up-and-down week, defeating Siena College 20-4 on March 13, winning their weekend series 2-1 over Pittsburgh and losing 10-6 to Northeastern on Tuesday. Nick Wang and Vince Cimini had strong outings vs. the Panthers with Wang hitting 6-for-14 with two home runs and seven RBIs, and Cimini going 8-for-12 with two homers and eight RBIs.

12. Notre Dame (12-8, 0-6)

Last week: 10

What to know: The Fighting Irish defeated Radford 11-6 on March 13, were swept by Florida State over the weekend and beat Western Michigan 16-11 on Tuesday. Notre Dame struggled at the plate vs FSU, recording seven hits in the opener then six hits apiece in the last two games, and could not score runs in late innings.

13. Pittsburgh (11-6, 1-5)

Last week: 12

What to know: The Panthers dropped their second ACC series 2-1 to Boston College. They also lost 7-6 to Youngstown State in extra innings on March 13 but defeated Kent State 12-8 on Tuesday. Despite having the sixth-best ERA in the conference (5.66), Pitt has the second-fewest strikeouts (166).

14. Louisville (14-7, 1-2)

Last week: 13

What to know: The Cardinals defeated Lipscomb 8-7 in extra innings on March 13, lost their first ACC series 2-1 to Virginia Tech and took care of Bellarmine 11-1 on Tuesday. Sebastian Gongora earned his third win of the season Friday, logging eight strikeouts and six hits over 6⅓ innings of three-run ball (two earned).
