VIDEO: Napa County Sheriff's Deputy Involved in Non-Fatal Shooting After Multi-City Pursuit, Suspects Plead GuiltySource: Napa County Sheriff's Office

The Napa County Sheriff's Office has released a video capturing a Deputy-Involved Shooting (DIS) that took place earlier this year following a chase that spanned across two counties. Deputy Josh Coleman of the Napa County Sheriff’s Office was involved in the incident on January 11, which unfolded after a vehicle pursuit starting in American Canyon and ending with a foot chase in Vallejo.

Footage from Ring Cameras belonging to residents in Vallejo was obtained and played a pivotal role as it was the sole recording of the shooting. However, obtaining the video was not simple for the Sheriff's Office. The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force, which was in charge of the investigation, and the Napa County District Attorney initially denied access to the footage, citing Penal Code Section 832.7 and the ongoing nature of the legal proceedings.

The suspects involved were found to be armed with three illegal handguns, complete with extended magazines. In the video, Deputy Coleman can be heard giving clear and repeated warnings to the suspects, as one of them, with a firearm in hand, attempted to flee. "Drop the gun, I see you, I’m going to shoot you," Coleman warned. The suspect who was shot sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received immediate medical care.

According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, the violent nature of the suspect's actions during the pursuit warranted the use of force. Both suspects have since entered guilty pleas, with Demarea Rogers Vaughn facing charges of illegal handgun possession, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor. Amarion Jozan Hill has been charged with evading a peace officer with willful disregard for safety, illegal handgun possession - both felonies, and resisting arrest, also a misdemeanor. Following these events, there are ongoing reviews to assess if any policies were violated during the incident.
