GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Town of Basalt made a historic discovery that brings light to the town’s roots as a railroad town.

Construction crews on Wednesday unearthed railroad infrastructure found deep underground in the downtown area, according to city officials. Basalt was a cutting-edge railroad town with standard gauge rails in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Construction is ongoing for the voter-approved Midland Avenue Streetscape project. According to the city, 71 percent of Basalt voters approved the project in 2021, but some community members expressed grievances about the project.
