Battle of Paducah event

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Paducah honored its historical significance in the American Civil War on Saturday with its annual event honoring those who fought in the Battle of Paducah in 1864.

The event remembers the strength of the U.S. 8th Colored Heavy Artillery during the battle that occurred on March 25, 1864. Betty Dobson and The Hotel Metropolitan set up this year's event.

"[This year's contributors] have made this event a truly memorable and meaningful tribute to our nation's heroes," said Dobson.

Attendees of this year's program were treated to a presentation from Dr. Nancy Dawson on the significance of the artillery and a solemn performance from Commissioner Richard Abraham with Dujuan Thomas featured as a soldier.

A wreath displayed by the Red Haters symbolized the theme of remembrance throughout the day.

Organizers of the event noted the diversity among visitors.

"[Attendees] joined together to honor and remember the courageous soldiers who fought for freedom and justice," said representatives for the Hotel Metropolitan.

The event continues to occur each year to remind residents of the bravery and sacrifices required during the city's infamous battle.
