Best Vacuums We Reviewed

Best Self-Emptying: Shark Wandvac Cordless Self-Empty System Vacuum

Shark Wandvac Cordless Self-Empty System Vacuum
Shark

Pros:

Great for small spaces, it thoroughly cleans your home and has a stylish and modern aesthetic

Cons:

None to speak of

The Shark Wandvac Self-Empty System is the brand’s first cordless stick vac with self-empty technology. It’s ideal for small spaces like mine (such as apartments, bathrooms, or dorms) but is powerful enough to tackle messes that pop up throughout the day anywhere in your home.

Not only is it designed to clean your entire home, but it’s also sleek enough to leave it where it will be most convenient to grab when you need it. We’d go as far as to say that with its stylish color, design, and small footprint, you might even want to show it off.

The Shark Wandvac Self-Empty System really is as great as it seems. It’s lightweight and powerful, easily moveable, features a self-cleaning brush roll, and reduces emptying dust exposure by up to 100x compared to traditional vacuums.

Best Lightweight Upright: Shark Navigator Lift-Away Upright Vacuum

blue standup Shark vacuum
Walmart

Pros:

It’s lightweight and has a HEPA filter and an upholstery cleaning accessory

Cons:

Not cordless

Well-priced at under $200, the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Upright Vacuum is a wonderful picker-upper, many thanks to the included crevice tool that helps dust away debris and pet hair. It’s also lightweight and portable for easy cleaning all throughout the house (especially if you have stairs).

We also love that it has a HEPA filter to trap germs and other things you don’t want flying around. More than 25,000 folks who bought this on Amazon trust it to handle their carpets and we do too!

Best Stick: Dyson V7 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

Dyson V7 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner
Amazon

Pros:

Incredible suction power, great for cleaning in hard-to-reach places

Cons:

Slightly heavier than other cordless vacuums tested

Similar to Dyson’s V8, the V7 Animal has slightly better suction power and is just a bit heavier. Much like the Omni-Glide, it snuggles into corners well, which is impressive given its head is wider and tougher than its slimmer counterpart.

The V7 Animal was one of the first models to make cordless vacuums a tried-and-true necessity, too. I’ve gotten everyone in my family hooked on its power and it truly doesn’t disappoint, especially for the under $400 price point that’s a one-time fee for a lifetime of cleaning.

Best Budget Handheld: BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser Lithium Ion Cordless Hand Vacuum

BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser Lithium Ion Cordless Hand Vacuum
Amazon

Pros:

It is most comparable to full-sized vacuums in terms of suction power and efficiency. It comes with a motorized brush tool and features a spacious, easy-to-empty dirt tank

Cons:

Larger than most other models tested, which may be a dealbreaker for some

From the moment it first powered on, the BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser Lithium Ion Cordless Hand Vacuum impressed me. It’s the ideal size for a handheld vacuum (though larger than most) but it has essentially the same power and efficiency as my cordless vacuums that cost upwards of $800. I know, total shock factor.

This model is also fairly priced at less than $100 and ideal for any user — whether you’re in college, live in a studio apartment, or own a five-bedroom home and want some convenience. This model boasts nearly 32,000 applauding reviews on Amazon alone and helps remove extra dirt and debris. The reason? It’s a pet vacuum, first and foremost, so its ability to pick up pet hair crosses over to the usual bathroom hair and under-bed dust.

I don’t have a pet at home, and the fact that this handheld vacuum has ranked above the pack is telling. Upon purchase, you’ll also receive a motorized brush tool and — one of the best parts — a large, easy-to-empty dirt tank.

Quite literally, I showed everyone in my household this nifty tool and they were impressed. It’s easy to use, easy to clean, and does the job greatly. What more can one ask for?

  • Best Robot Vacuum and Mop: Roborock S7+ Robot Vacuum and Sonic Mop

Roborock S7+ Robot Vacuum and Sonic Mop, black
    Amazon

    Pros:

Memorizes your home’s floor plan with its mobile map feature, easy to clean, doesn’t leave any dust on the floor

    Cons:

It can be difficult to return the vacuum to the dock from room to room

First things first — let me start by saying that, yes, $700 is rather steep for a robot vacuum, even if you don’t mind the price tag. But the quality, precision of cleaning, multi-tasking ability and ultra-modern functionality are quite unmatched.

I didn’t think robot vacuums were all the rage if I’m being honest. After all, won’t a cordless stick vacuum do the job? Spoiler alert: they do, as mentioned in the Dyson vacuum review, but with the Roborock S7+ Robot Vacuum and Sonic Mop, I’m able to work my 9-to-5, read a few chapters of my book, paint my nails and even shower. It’s not only life-changing but life-giving.

What’s great about the Roborock S7+ is its ability to recognize and remember your home’s map. While I remove any shopping bags or shoes from my hardwood floor before setting it to clean, it does a wonderful job of avoiding furniture legs and even has the built-in smartness to recognize textured carpet and power on to a higher speed.

Moreover, the paired app is extremely useful. You can pause a clean at any time and you’ll receive a notification when it’s finished cleaning and on its way back to its charging dock. (Yeah, it’s that disciplined.) The dust bin is simple to remove and it’s easy to clean afterward; a simple damp rag over the bottom will do.

Explore other Roborock models that fit into your budget, too.

  • Best for Pet Hair: Dyson V12 Detect Slim Vacuum

    Dyson V12 Detect Slim Vacuum
    Dyson

    Pros:

Precisely cleans your home, has an LED screen that tells you how it’s cleaning, has a longer run time compared to other models tested, can detect dust well

    Cons:

Has a more expensive price point than other models tested

If you’re looking for a newer model with incredible suction and smartness (thanks to its slim-detect LED screen), the Dyson V12 is hard to beat. Not only is it the best modern vacuum, but it runs for a full hour of deep cleaning without needing a charge and turns into a handheld for cushions and corners.

What’s more, it’s Dyson’s “most compact intelligent cordless vacuum,” boasting laser technology that shows you exactly what it’s cleaning and how it’s cleaning it. This model is pretty spectacular and super easy to maneuver (it doesn’t even feel like cleaning after all).

For pet owners, the head has a detangling brush, which means you don’t have to pull your pet’s hair from the device once you’re through using it. Instead, it all gets sucked up into the canister, which can be emptied.

  • Best Upright: Dyson Ball Animal 2 Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Dyson Ball Animal 2 Upright Vacuum Cleaner, purple
    Amazon

    Pros:

Excellent for deep cleaning, stands upright, amazing for textured carpets

    Cons:

Quite heavy, has a cord, isn’t as versatile as some other models tested

I’ve had the Dyson Ball Animal 2 Upright Vacuum Cleaner as the sole carpet-cleaning device in my household for as long as I remember. Though it’s heavy and cordless — minor inconveniences after testing the brand’s cordless stick models — it does a ferocious job of deep-cleaning textured carpets.

From shag to Berber, this model collects fine dust and debris exceptionally well. If you prefer heavy-duty vacuums, I recommend it, though cordless models have that convenience factor you may want to consider.

    More Best Vacuums of 2024

  • Best Multi-Surface: Black + Decker PowerSeries + 20VMax Cordless Vacuum

Best Vacuums Reviewed: an image of a vacuum cleaner with a white handle.
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Automatically adjust cleaning based on floor type
    • Headlight to view hard to see spots, such as beneath a table or bed
    • Excellent on hardwood

    Cons:

    • Louder than average

Don’t let the size of this stick vacuum fool you. It’s mighty as they come with lots of bells and whistles. A favorite of our Decider commerce writer, Angela Tricarico, the machine has cyclonic filtration, as well as sensors to tell the surface type its cleaning. As you maneuver from carpet to hardwood, it automatically adjust its power, giving the area a more customized treatment. Neat, right?

The front light works wonder when making sure no dusty bunnies are beneath the bed, and the anti-tangle brush does a solid job at removing fur from the floor.

  • Best Robot: iRobot Roomba 678 Robot Vacuum

iRobot Roomba 678 Robot Vacuum with WiFi
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Floor mapping
    • Works with Alexa
    • Edge sweeping brush to clean corners

    Cons:

    • May be a little intimidating for those less techy. However, it’s not hard to set up once you start.

Ah, the robot vacuum that’s known for its smart abilities to make cleaning a snap. For less than $250, it’s a more affordable robot vacuum than the Roborock S7+, boasting the same WiFi connectivity. Plus, it has a patented three-stage cleaning system that picks up both small particles and larger debris. The edge brush of the device gets the corners, so don’t worry about its round body being unable to reach. You’ll also love the multi-surface brush, which can dislodge fur and dust at different levels. Whether you have high or low pile carpets, you’ll get them dirt-free with this bad boy!

  • Best Wet Dry Vacuum: Tineco Floor ONE S7 PRO Smart Cordless Floor Cleaner

Best Vacuums Reviewed - an image of a vacuum cleaner with a handle.
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Works for laminate floors, as well as hardwood
    • Dual-side edge cleaning
    • MHCBS Technology that uses continual fresh water to clean floors

    Cons:

    • Can’t be used on carpets

Most of us don’t have one single type of flooring in our room, so we love that the Tineco Floor ONE S7 Pro Smart Cordless Cleaner is exceptional at handling tiles, hardwood, as well as laminated floors. It has a unique internal system that filters the water as it operates. This means you won’t be washing your floors with the dirty water collected from the last room you passed.

The vacuum also has a smart sensor that detects the level of grime and dust, adjusting its suction power, saving energy. Its self-propulsion system also makes for smooth transitioning around corners. Best of all, since its part vac, part mop, you save on cleaning space and time!

  • Best Car Vacuum: Black+Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean Cordless Handheld Vacuum

Black+Decker Dustbuster AdvancedClean Cordless Handheld Vacuum, light blue and gray
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Also can be used on bookshelves or kept for the office
    • Cordless design
    • Washable filter

    Cons:

    • Non-HEPA filter

Sometimes, a trusty handheld vacuum will do the trick. Black+Decker’s Dustbuster is a great cleaning tool to have on hand for less than $60. Its portable, lightweight nature coupled with its slim-nozzled, ergonomic design makes it perfect to keep in your back pocket.

Although we favor a HEPA filter for our vacuums, we do like that this filter is washable. The machine also uses cyclonic suction for consistently strong power, so even if your car is a hot mess, it will look squeaky clean once you’ve used this.

  • Best for Small Spaces: Shark Anti-Allergen Pet Power Cordless Stick Vacuum

Shark Anti-Allergen Pet Power Cordless Stick Vacuum, royal blue
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Good for above-floor carpets and hardwood floors
    • HEPA filter
    • Under 10 pounds

    Cons:

    • Not great at picking up larger pieces of debris

Slim body aside, Shark’s Anti-Allergen Pet Power Cordless Stick Vacuum is fairly priced for its Dyson-like functionality. It runs for up to 50 minutes of cleaning, has a powerful brush head, and even transforms into a handheld vacuum to tackle just about every crevice in your home.

This is a great stick vacuum for those with lots of hard surfaces in their home, as well as throw rugs. The main head can be removed, transforming the machine into a wand to reach ceiling corners, and it also converts into a handheld for your sofa. Best of all, it’s lightweight!

  • Best for Carpet: BISSELL 2252 CleanView Swivel Pet

Best Vacuums Reviewed: a vacuum cleaner on a white background.
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Large capacity tank
    • Swivel steering
    • Edge-to-edge cleaning

    Cons:

    • No HEPA filter

This vacuum almost received the best vacuum for pet hair title, mainly because of its accessories that remove fur so well. However, there’s so much more about this vacuum to love, especially when carpets are concerned. Its head has a triple-action brush roll, which helps to lift dirt and debris lodged in the pill, while the machine’s hardy suction carries it into the canister.

We also love the ergonomic design of the vacuum, especially the swivel head, which makes navigating around furniture and smaller passages easier. Although it’s not the smallest machine, it’s not massive or too heavy. More importantly, it does a bang up job of keeping rugs clean.

  • Best Budget: Eureka WhirlWind Bagless Canister Vacuum Cleaner

Eureka WhirlWind Bagless Canister Vacuum Cleaner, blue and black
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Easy to steer
    • Reusable filter

    Cons:

    • Needs to be emptied more often, because of the small canister

For one of Amazon’s top-rated canister vacuums, consider the Eureka WhirlWind. For less than $80, it has three settings for carpet, upholstery and hard floors and is especially ergonomic for maneuvering over your couch cushions and mattress.

Also, it’s bag-free, so all you’ll have to maintain is its washable, reusable filter. Its easy-to-use, two-in-one crevice tool is a nifty feature as well.

  • Best Handheld: Bissell Featherweight Stick Bagless Vacuum with Crevice Tool

Bissell Featherweight Stick Bagless Vacuum with Crevice Tool, teal
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Converts into a handheld
    • Good for small spaces, hard wood floors and tiles

    Cons:

    • This vacuum does have a cord, which can make navigating around furniture slightly harder

For $34, you truly have nothing to lose. We can practically feel how lightweight Bissell’s Featherweight Stick Vacuum is through the computer screen and appreciate that it comes with a crevice tool for more convenient cleaning.

  • Best Canister: Eureka Lightweight Powerful Upright Vacuum Cleaner

    A vacuum with accessories
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Lightweight
    • Comes with multiple cleaning tools, and even works on curtains
    • Deep cleaning through its PowerSpeed cyclonic technology

    Cons:

    • No HEPA filter
    • Brush can get tangled with hair if not cleaned on a regular basis

Sometimes you just want a simple, high-quality vacuum that can handle everything like this model from Eureka. Besides being under $100, its setup is straightforward. Cleaning settings are stationed at the base of the vacuum head, while the top handle not only allows for the lightweight vac to be carried from room to room but also opens the canister for emptying.

Armed with a washable filter, five different power settings and three different cleaning tools, it can even handle shag carpets.

  • Best Touchscreen: PrettyCare Cordless Vacuum Cleaner with LED Touch Display

PrettyCare Cordless Vacuum Cleaner with LED Touch Display
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • 4-in-1 design
    • Easy to use LED display
    • HEPA filter

    Cons:

    • The filter has to be frequently cleaned

You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on a robot vacuum to have a smart cleaning device in your home.

We’re so glad we discovered PrettyCare’s Cordless Vacuum Cleaner — a powerful tool that’s similar to Dyson but with an LED touch display to control the suction level. For less than $100 right now, it’s worth adding to your cart. Along with having reusable HEPA filter, the cordless stick vacuum also has a stainless steel filter, extending the filtration life of the entire device. Although it will need to be cleaned more (along with the cylindrical sponge), but for the price and what it can do — it has a touchscreen! — it’s a steal.

  • Best Budget Robot Vacuum: Eufy by Anker BoostIQ RoboVac

Eufy by Anker BoostIQ RoboVac, black, slim
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Optimal for tiles, hardwood floors, and low to medium pile carpets or rugs
    • Quiet
    • Has a run time of 100 minutes

    Cons:

    • Uses random motion

As one of the most affordable robot vacuums we found, Eufy by Anker’s BoostIQ RoboVac is a less-than-$200 option that’s slimmer than most — so apt for smaller spaces. It’s also much-loved for being impressively quiet and for upping its cleaning speed when hovering over carpet.

For those who like a robot vacuum that maps, Alex and similar bells and whistles, we suggest the Robot Vacuum. However, if you just need a handy machine that will suck up every crumb and speck of dust, grab this while it’s on sale.

  • Best Hardwood Floors: Dreametech Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Dreametech Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, white and sleek
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Works on all surfaces but is fantastic on tile and hardwood
    • Five layers of filtration
    • Converts to a handheld

    Cons:

    • Turbo suction is necessary for the best carpet cleaning, according to some customers

While cleaning efficiency is a priority, Dreamtech’s Cordless Vacuum Cleaner also graces your home with a sleek white and gold exterior that’s too minimally chic not to love.

Specifically, this model has a powerful brushless motor, up to an hour of runtime and a five-layer filtration system to capture even the most minuscule dust particles. It’s one of our favorites, by far.

  • Best Battery Powered: Samsung Bespoke Jet Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

Samsung 90 + CS Bundle Jet Cordless Stick Vacuum
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Five layer HEPA filter
    • Self cleaning station
    • Upholstery tools for sofas and hard to reach areas

    Cons:

    • Battery takes up to 3 hours to charge
    • Only one battery comes in an order, so we suggesting picking up an extra (Samsung Bespoke Battery, $139)

Not only known for its fabulous Picture Frame TV, but Samsung also has a new device in town: its Jet Cordless Stick Vacuum. Though it’s a splurge, it has a five-layer filtration system like Dreametech’s model, too, and an automatically emptying dustbin to make cleaning an easy-breezy process.

  • Best with Steamer: BISSELL Revolution HydroSteam

A vacuum with cleaning supplies and cleaning solution.
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Great for high-traffic areas, and those who have pets
    • Dirt lifting power brushes

    Cons:

    • Heavy

Whether you have lots of furry pets or a home with kids running through, wearing muddy sneakers, this vacuum can help clean up the mess. Its HydroSteam cleaning function softens harden grime and lifts it away with the machines dual brushes.

Cleaning solution is included and the dry time is only 30 minutes! Dingy rugs will quickly become a thing of the past with this by yourself. Best of all, it’s currently on sale at Amazon!

  • Best for Tiles: Eureka Home Lightweight Mini Cleaner

A vacuum and a handheld vacuum
    Amazon

    Pros:

    • Converts into a handheld
    • Swivel head
    • Freestanding design

    Cons:

    • Not great on carpets

For bathrooms, kitchen floors and other hard surfaces, this vacuum is worth considering. It’s light, easy to turn and more importantly, is strong enough to grab the dirt caught between tiling. We wouldn’t recommend it for carpets, especially those of a medium pile or more. However, linoleum, tiles and wood? Oh, yes!

The vacuum is bagless, which we love to see, and it’s easily converted to a handheld for sofa cushions, table tops and other smaller surface areas. Best of all it’s under $50 and on sale at Amazon!
