AUSTIN (KXAN) — During an event Wednesday, the Austin ISD Police Department announced the creation of its new motorcycle unit.

AISD Police said the motorcycle division would be mainly used for elementary schools starting with 35 officers.

“Our team of Austin ISD police officers are responsible for supporting more than 73,000 students and 113 of our campuses,” the district said.

Dozens of additional officers were expected to join the district in response to a new law that requires an armed officer on every school campus.

“Upon the passing of Texas HB3 in 2023, the Austin ISD school board voted to hire additional district police officers to support campuses and comply with the law,” the district said.

The event also served as a launch for the recruitment efforts for the unit, according to the department.
