Denham Springs Mayor Gerard Landry served as grand marshal of the inaugural St. Patrick's Day Parade in Denham Springs.

St. Patrick's Day, or the Feast of St. Patrick, commemorates the foremost patron saint of Ireland, as well as the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general, a news release said.

Sen. J. Rogers Pope is serving as parade grand marshal. He is a graduate of Denham Springs High School and Southeastern Louisiana University. He served in the Livingston Parish schools as a teacher, coach, principal, human resource director, assistant principal and principal before moving up to assistant superintendent, and then superintendent.

After retiring from the school system, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, and is now a Louisiana state senator.

Main Street is a nonprofit community organization which helps promote the downtown historic district and preserve the history of Denham Springs.
