Bluefield State baseball wraps up three game sweep of Virginia State

Mar. 26—PETERSBURG, Va. — Bluefield State University baseball swept the Virginia State Trojans, 10-3, 1-0, and 6-3 in a CIAA Sunday-Monday road series.

In the first game on Sunday, after two scoreless innings, the Big Blue took the lead in the top of the fourth. Noah Moritz lead off the inning with a single to second base and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Moritz advanced to third on a fly out from Peyton Lewis and was later brought home by a single up the middle from Tahir Meulens.

The Trojans scored two in the bottom of the inning, but the Big Blue evened the score at two in the top of the fourth. Chris Larkin drew the lead off walk followed by a single from Jean Carlos Diaz.

Korbin Bostic singled through the right side to bring home Diaz. In the fifth, Moritz and Tahraun Hammond lead off the inning with back-to-back singles with Lewis reaching on a fielders choice to load the bases.

A grand slam from Meulens gave the Big Blue the 6-2 lead. Later in the inning, Diaz extended the Big Blue lead with a home run to left field. The Big Blue added two more in the seventh to take the eight run lead. The Trojans scored one in the bottom of the inning, but the Big Blue defense got them out of the inning to seal the 10-3 victory.

Zach Powell earned the win on the mound throwing six innings, allowing two hits, two runs, four walks and striking out seven. Zane Eggleston closed out the game giving up one hits, one run and striking out one.

The the lone run of Sunday's second game game belonged to the Big Blue.

Peyton Lewis doubled down the left field line, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to give Bluefield State the lead. Hammond, Lewis, Diaz, Jacob Trivette and Moritz each collected hits in game two.

Braeden Major threw the complete game for the Big Blue only giving up three hits, two walks and struck out three.

The Big Blue offense started early in Monday's game three of the series, with back-to-back singled from Lewis and Hammond. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly from Larkin brought home Hammond to take the 1-0 lead.

In the third, Moritz led off the inning with a single followed by a stolen base. Lewis doubled to left field to extend the Big Blue lead 2-0. In the fourth, Hammond drew a walk and was later brought around after a double by Meulens to push the Big Blue lead 3-0.

The Trojans evened the score at 3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Big Blue answered back in the seventh to take back the lead 6-3.

After both teams would go scoreless through the last two innings, the Big Blue would come away with the 6-3 victory.

Alex Kanipe earned the win for the Big Blue, throwing 3.1 innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out five.

The Big Blue will host Davis & Elkins College in a double header Wednesday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
