MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Quincy Blue Devils closed out its trip to the Bluff City for the USA High School Baseball Challenge on Tuesday, splitting a pair of games.
Quincy started off Tuesday's action with a 4-1 win against a strong Kenston (Ohio) team behind a strong pitching performance by Brady Lowe.
Lowe got the start and was the winning pitcher after pitching four innings of no-hit shutout ball, striking out four batters and allowing two walks.
Cam Lawson pitched an inning in relief with two strikeouts; while allowing no hits, one walk and one earned run. James Day pitched the final two innings with three strikeouts and allowed one hit, no walks and no runs.
QHS scored a run in the first inning to take the lead and tacked on a pair of runs in the third as it would lead the entire game.
QHS center fielder Evan Sohn was a sparkplug during the first game, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.
Blue Devils left fielder Tykell Hammers went 1-for-3 with a walk, run and an RBI. Lowe went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
"Great win for us in the first game," said QHS head coach Rick Lawson. "Lowe was dominant and Cam Lawson and James Day were very good out of the pen. Great team win against last season's state champ in Ohio."
The Blue Devils fell to Oswego East 7-5 in the second game.
Oswego East scored three runs in the first inning, but Quincy would tie it up in the top of the third with a three-run inning of their own. Oswego East would regain the lead with a two-run bottom of the third, until the Blue Devils tied it up at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, with OE regaining the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth.
Jansen Lawson got the start in the second game and went three innings with two strikeouts; while allowing five hits, two walks and three earned runs. Sohn pitched two innings in relief, while Kayleb Bush pitched an inning in relief. Logan Forrest had 11 pitches during the sixth inning, but did not record an out.
Sohn went 1-for-3 with a double, walk and a run in the second game. Lowe was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
"Tough loss against another good team out of Chicago," said Lawson. "Battled to the end. Gutty pitching by all the guys. We played some good baseball today. I like the direction we are going."
QHS (2-5) will return home and has a road game against Palmyra (1-4) at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
