New Mexico Primary Election: Doña Ana candidates file for local, state, federal races

Filing day for the 2024 elections was March 12.

Thirty-eight candidates filed for local or state elected positions in Doña Ana County.

Voters can cast ballots beginning May 7 for the June 4 primary. In New Mexico, only voters registered to one of the three major parties ― Democratic Party, Republican Party, Libertarian Party of New Mexico ― are eligible to vote in the primary election. The Green Party of New Mexico is considered a minor party. Primary elections determine each qualified party's nomination of candidates for federal offices, and in certain cases include state and county offices

Federal, state and local seats draw several candidates

Voters will be able to choose between Democrat incumbent Martin Heinrich from Albuquerque and Santa Fe Republican Nella Louise Domenici in the General Election. Neither candidate faces a challenge in the primary.

In the District 2 Congressional race Democrat incumbent Gabriel Vasquez from Las Cruces will once again look to defeat La Luz Republican Yvette Herrell.

In Doña Ana County the Third Judicial District Attorney's race will see Democrat incumbent Gerald Byers seek a second term. Byers will face Las Cruces Democrats Shaharazad Booth, Ramona Martinez, Pedro Pineda and Mesilla Democrat Fernando Macias. The winner will face Las Cruces Republican Michael Cain.

Here are other local competitive races:

County Clerk: Democrat incumbent Amanda Lopez Askin from Las Cruces faces Las Cruces Democrat Andrew Ostic with the winner to face Republican Las Cruces Republican Cheryl De Young.

District 2 County Commissioner: Democrat incumbent Diana Murillo from Anthony will face Anthony Democrat Gloria Gameros with the winner to face Chamberino Republican Lorraine Limon McCullough.

District 4 County Commissioner: Democrat incumbent Irma Susana Chaparro from Las Cruces will face Organ Republican Durham.

District 5 County Commissioner: Democrat incumbent Manuel Sanchez from Dona Ana will face Las Cruces Democrat Oscar Vasquez Butler.

Several candidates emerge for New Mexico's statehouse seats

Two New Mexico Senate seats and six House seats saw multiple people file for candidacy.

State Senate District 36: Democrat incumbent Jeff Steinborn will face Republican candidate David Tofsted. Both candidates are from Las Cruces.

State Senate District 38: Democrat incumbent Carrie Hamblen will face Republican Samantha Barcastle Salopek. Both candidates are from Las Cruces.

State Representative District 32: Deming Democrat Andrew Simon Hernandez III will face Hatch Democrat Linda Alvarez with the winner facing Republican incumbent Jenifer Jones.

State Representative District 34: Democrat incumbent Raymundo Lara from Chamberino will face Las Cruces Republican Larry Sedillo.

State Representative District 35: Democrat incumbent Angelica Rubio will face Democrat Gabriel Duran. Both candidates are from Las Cruces.

State Representative District 36: Democrat incumbent Nathan Small from Dona Ana will face Las Cruces Republican Kimberly Skaggs.

State Representative District 37: Democrat incumbent Joanne Ferrary from Las Cruces will face Las Cruces Republican Ronnie Sisneros.

State Representative District 53: Democrat incumbent Willie Madrid from Chaparral will face Las Cruces Democrat Jon Hill in the Primary Election. The winner will face Organ Republican Elizabeth Lee Winterrowd.

New Mexico June primary features unopposed local, state elections

Several local candidates will run unopposed in the June primary for local and state seats.

Democrat Nathan William Graff will run unopposed for the magistrate court judge seat. Mesilla Park Democrat Marisol Richardson is running unopposed for County treasurer.

State Senate District 31: Democrat incumbent Joseph Cervantes from Las Cruces

State Senate District 37: Democrat incumbent William Peter Soules from Las Cruces

State Representative District 33: Democrat incumbent Micaela Lara Cadena from Mesilla

State Representative District 52: Democrat incumbent Doreen Yvonne Gallegos from Las Cruces
