Ingrid Lindblad's record-setting performance, Florida State sweep at Valspar among college golf highlights from past week

Another week of college golf has come and gone, and numerous teams are wrapping up their regular seasons and beginning prep for conference championships.

Some golfers, like LSU’s Ingrid Lindblad and Florida State’s Luke Clanton, are in peak form. Other teams recorded milestone victories, whether it was for the coach or program.

There were also numerous records to go down, including a conference record.

All in all, the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa are less than two months away, and teams are jockeying for position to pay their best golf yet.

Here’s everything you need to know from the last week of college golf:

Ingrid Lindblad's SEC record

The SEC has never had a female golfer like Ingrid Lindblad.

The graduate student at LSU dominated the Clemson Invitational, winning the tournament for the third time. However, it’s how she did it and how significant the victory was that makes it stand out.

Lindblad shot 18-under 198 at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, South Carolina, winning by 10 shots. The victory was also the 14th of her career, giving her more wins than any female golfer in SEC history.

Former Arkansas and LPGA star Stacy Lewis held the previous record of 13 wins.

It’s the third victory this season for Lindblad, who heads to Augusta National next week with plenty of momentum. Adela Cernousek of Texas A&M finished at 8-under 208. Anna Morgan of Furman was third at 7-under 209.

LSU placed third in the team competition. Vanderbilt took home the team title, shooting 12 under with Texas A&M placing second at 6 under. The Tigers shot 3 under.

Luke Clanton is perhaps playing the best golf of any Division I college golfer right now.

The sophomore at Florida State won the Valspar Collegiate, carding a 14-under performance that included a clinching final-round 66 on Tuesday. The win earned him a spot in the PGA Tour’s 2025 Valspar Championship.

Clanton won his last tournament played at the Seminole Intercollegiate. He is the first Seminole to win consecutive tournaments since John Pak won in back-to-back fashion in the shortened 2020 season at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate (Feb. 11) and the Seminole Intercollegiate (Feb. 23).

He won by five strokes over Vanderbilt’s Matthew Riedel and Arkansas’ Christian Castillo.

For Florida State, it was its third victory at the Valspar and 100th tournament win in program history, which dates to the first at the Dixie Conference Tournament in 1950.

Seniors Frederik Kjettrup and Gray Albright each tied for eighth at 3 under.

Auburn men’s golf earned its third consecutive tournament title following a wire-to-wire win at the Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The win was the 50th for coach Nick Clinard as well as the team’s sixth of the season, which set a new program record.

As a team, Auburn shot 11-over to edge out its nearest foe, Stetson, by seven strokes. Six of the Tigers’ 10 golfers earned top-15 individual placements. Freshman Jackson Koivun led the way with a runner-up finish at 6 under. It was the sixth consecutive top-five outing for Koivun.

Redshirt junior Carson Bacha collected his seventh career top 10 with a T-6 showing. He shot 1-over 217. Freshman Josiah Gilbert scored one stroke higher, 2-over 218, and finished ninth.

Illinois takes Duck Invitational

Illinois won its third tournament of the season at the Oregon Duck Invitational, and Jackson Buchanan took home medalist honors for his third collegiate victory.

The Illini were 10 over after the opening round on Monday morning but responded with the two lowest team rounds of the tournament, back-to-back 6-under 278s, to overtake host Oregon for the seven-stroke victory.

Buchanan’s rise mirrored that of the team. The junior carded a 2-over 73 in Round 1, but climbed 24 spots up the leaderboard in Round 2 with a 4-under 67. He then closed out the win with another 67 in Round 3, carding three birdies and an eagle to offset one bogey. Buchanan finished with a score of 6-under 207, three shots ahead of Utah’s Javier Barcos.

Freshman Max Herendeen finished seventh at even. It marks his third top-10 finish of the season. Another Illini freshman, Ethan Wilson, finished one stroke behind Herendeen in a tie for eighth to complete his first top-10 finish.

South Carolina women win Old Darby match play

South Carolina went 2-0-1 to be crowned champions of the inaugural Old Barnwell Derby Match Play over the last two days in Aiken County at the newly formed Old Barnwell Club, the Gamecocks, the host school, played Duke, Florida State and Mississippi State.

Each team faced off against one another over two days in a round-robin format. South Carolina and Duke beat Florida State and Mississippi State, setting up a de facto championship match.

Duke rallied and tied a pair of matches late, as things finished all square at 2.5-2.5. The Gamecocks prevailed, however, thanks to senior Sophia Burnett’s 5-and-4 victory.

The victory is the fourth this season for South Carolina. It’s the 27th career win under coach Kalen Anderson.

The LSU men’s golf team earned its third win of the season Tuesday, as it finished 15-under 849 at The Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awendaw, South Carolina. The Tigers carded a 1-under 287 in the final round to secure a six-stroke victory over New Mexico.

LSU’s win marks the 126th team title in program history. It’s the second win through five events with interim coach Andrew Nelson at the helm. The Tigers have played their best golf as of late, marking the most wins in a season since the 2017-2018 season when the Tigers won three times.

Jay Mendell finished the final round tied for first at 6-under 210 with two others. The freshman carded two birdies in his final five holes to advance to a playoff.

However, it was Missouri’s Jack Lundin defeating South Carolina’s Frankie Harris on the third playoff hole to capture his first win this season and third of his career.
