Hervé Renard, whose French side welcome Ireland next week, is set to leave his role as head coach of France's women's national team after the Olympic Games this summer.

Thus, he will step away from existing contractual obligations, but he is intent on leading a men’s side at the next World Cup, a competition Ireland haven’t featured in since 2002.

Renard was appointed by the FFF late last March when Corinne Diacre left the role but his side exited the World Cup at the quarter-final stage.

“It had to be done at some point, but that doesn’t call anything into question,” he said.

“With my staff, we are having a lot of fun, we can’t wait to arrive at the start of the course on Monday

“It’s a difficult job. If I had to be brief, I have in the back of my mind the 2026 World Cup in men’s football, I hope that it will be my third World Cup at the head of a men’s team. These are my personal motivations.”

Renard appeared at the last Men’s World Cup, leading Saudi Arabia to a shock opening win against eventual champions Argentina, before losing their remaining group games to exit the competition.
