Baseball/softball replay: McKinney stuns nationally ranked Denton Guyer in softball

Defending state champion Flower Mound wins after being one out from defeat; Dallas Baptist signee strikes out 19 for Grapevine.

Game of the day

The McKinney softball team had been outscored 22-4 in losing its last two games, but Friday night it got a brilliant pitching performance from Caydance Gaddis and shocked nationally ranked Denton Guyer 3-1.

Gaddis pitched a six-hitter, struck out seven and didn’t allow a run after the third inning in beating a Guyer team that was ranked No. 1 in the Dallas area, No. 4 in the state and No. 21 in the nation (per MaxPreps). McKinney took a 2-1 lead on a two-out, two-run single by Kady Huggins with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, and that proved to be the winning hit.

It didn’t look like McKinney’s lead would last long when Guyer’s Briana Williams reached third leading off the inning (on a double and an error) and then Lauryn Jones reached on a bunt single with one out. But Gaddis got a fielder’s choice and an out at home for the second out, then after pitcher Finley Montgomery walked with two outs to load the bases, Gaddis got a flyout to end the inning without a run scoring.
