Man arrested after teenager killed in Hueytown hit-and-run
HUEYTOWN, Ala. (WBRC) - On Tuesday, March 26, just after midnight, a Hueytown police officer observed a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road near the intersection of Allison Bonnett Memorial Drive and Brooklane Drive. The officer conducted a traffic stop and subsequently arrested 70-year-old Walter Lee Ellison for DUI and transported him to the Hueytown City Jail.
During the arrest, officers noticed fresh damage to Ellison’s vehicle and searched the area, but were unable to find anything that matched the damage to Ellison’s vehicle.
Later that morning, around 6:15 a.m., officers responded to a person down call near the intersection of Hueytown Road and Walker Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers observed 18-year-old Gabriel Demorris Edwards dead. While on scene, officers found numerous car parts lying near Edwards.
Officers who were working earlier in the morning passed on information of the damaged vehicle from the DUI arrest, and after investigation, authorities say that additional evidence showed that Edwards was struck by Ellison at 11:30 p.m. Monday March 25.

After a review of evidence, Ellison was charged with murder, felony of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and driving under the influence in reference to the death of Edwards.
Ellison is currently awaiting transfer to the Jefferson County Jail where he will have no bond.
