An arrest was made in connection to a deadly hit-and-run in Hueytown late Monday night.

The Hueytown Police Department said 70-year-old Walter Lee Ellison was was charged with murder, felony leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, and driving under the influence in the death of 18-year-old Gabriel Demorris Edwards.

The police department said on Tuesday, March 26 just after midnight, an officer noticed a pickup truck traveling on the wrong side of the road near the intersection of Allison Bonnet Memorial Drive and Brooklane Drive.

The officer stopped the truck and the driver, identified as Ellison was arrested and taken to the city jail on a DUI charge.

The police department said the officer noticed new damage on the front of the truck, but could not determine what caused it.

Later that morning, just after 6:00 a.m., the police department said it responded to a person down call in the intersection of Hueytown Road and Walker Avenue.

Edwards was found dead off the roadway.

Police said multiple car parts were found near Edwards. Edwards is believed to have been walking north on Hueytown Road when he was hit by the truck.

Police said the car parts at the scene were matched with the truck from the DUI arrest hours earlier.

Ellison is being held without bond and is awaiting transfer to the Jefferson County Jail.
