WORRIED that AI could take your job? You’re not the only one.
A study by investment bank Goldman Sachs suggested AI could eventually replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time roles across the US and Europe, with around three per cent of roles fully automated within the next two years.
However, AI also has the potential to create thousands of completely new roles.
Currently, there are over 11,000 vacancies for AI specialists across the UK, with a hefty average salary of £66,000 and many jobs paying over £100,000.
So if you want to get wise to AI, here’s what you need to know about working in the exciting new sector.
What is AI and why do we need it at work?
Put simply, Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a new technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities.

There are lots of different ways it can be used at work but its primary aim is to support humans to work more quickly and efficiently while automating simple and repetitive roles.
The exact task AI performs will differ from business to business, but examples include helping to write reports, presentations or marketing brochures searching databases, answering questions and retrieving complex information — even examining medical scans and notes to help diagnose an illness.
What types of jobs is AI creating?
AI is a new technology and needs human input to function effectively.
New jobs include Machine Learning Engineers who create algorithms and programmes which allow machines to work without being directed by humans, such as a self-driving car or a customised social media newsfeed and AI trainers who teach AI systems how to think and interact.

How much do AI jobs pay?
Currently, the highest pay is for Machine Learning Engineers with an average salary of £106,250.
Data scientists who use software, artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyse and interpret large amounts of data pocket an average of £70,191 while AI trainers can expect around £45,000.
All are well above the national average wage.
What qualifications will I need to get an AI job?
AI is a new industry and is attracting top talent, so you’ll need to have specific computing qualifications.
Machine Learning Engineers will need a master's degree or Ph.D. in computer science, plus excellent maths and data analysis skills.
There are several degree programmes for Data Scientists and some firms such as British Airways are now offering Data Science apprenticeships.

AI Trainers will eventually become the most common AI job with many firms offering accredited courses.
