(WBNG) -- During April, volunteer fire departments throughout the state will be opening their doors as part of the annual “Recruit New York” campaign.

The initiative, which is sponsored by the Firefighters Association of the State of New York, allows departments to host open hours and informational sessions the weekend of April 13 and 14 on how community members can get involved.

FASNY Secretary John D’Alessandro told 12 News regardless of your background, there’s a place for you at your local fire department.

“I would encourage anyone of any age [to join],” he said. “If you’ve got a skillset and you’ve got some curiosity about what it would take to join your local volunteer fire department, next time you see them doing something there on a weekend or on a drill night, stop in for a few minutes and talk to somebody.”

In Broome County, Chenango Bridge Fire Company, Prospect Terrace Fire Company, the Vestal Fire Department and the Deposit Volunteer Fire Department will all be opening their doors to the community on April 13.
