BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Trivia, a new marketplace, and even a new walking club are just some of the activities happening at City Walk Birmingham this weekend.

The Modern Green Book Marketplace takes place Saturday and is a way celebrate Black-owned businesses.

Theo Edwards, CEO and founder of The Modern Green Book, said the monthly marketplace is a manifestation of dreams for her.

“We really started with just one market a year and I thought it was time to explore a monthly deal,” Edwards said. “So I reached out to City Walk and they were willing to work with me. So, we’re hosting a monthly marketplace here to celebrate Black-owned businesses, Black culture, Black art. It’s really a way for the community to connect with these Black brands who a lot of times don’t have their own brick and mortar space here to shop in regularly.

The Modern Greenbook is a modernized version of “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” created by Victo Hugo Green in the 1930s.

According to moderngreenbook.net, the Green Book was “an extensive list of Black owned businesses and white allied businesses. It was a guide that provided safe lodging options and places to eat for Black motorists on their travels.”

Edwards wanted to take the concept and bring it into the 21st century.

“I took that same idea, that same concept and flipped it and modernized it so that people of any race can open up this Green Book and support Black-owned businesses,” she said. “We have a database throughout the country of Black-owned businesses listed with us.”

Edwards said a lot of the businesses coming to Saturday’s marketplace are listed in The Modern Green Book and are Birmingham-based. Some are traveling in from surrounding counties.

“Everybody here is just super excited to share their talents and their services and their products. We have some really exciting vendors coming, not only in March, but the entire season.”

The Modern Green Book Marketplace is from 4 until 8 p.m. Saturday at City Walk Social and then once per month afterwards.

Other events happening at City Walk this week includes roller skate lessons for adults Monday through Friday from noon until 3 p.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, there is Magic City Fútbol. Another part of the weekly programs is BMX Nights at the skate park.

The great thing about these events is that many of them will be recurring, either weekly or monthly.
