The Body Shop store in Brixton has now permanently closed

Last month, the Body Shop revealed that it was going to close 75 stores across the UK with the loss of 489 jobs, as part of a ‘restructuring’ scheme.

Sadly, the Brixton Body Shop was included in a list of the six south London closures (the others being Battersea, Bexleyheath, Croydon, Epsom and Lewisham Centre).

So yesterday at 6pm marked the final day for the Brixton Road store, which had been operating from the same premises for decades (above, you can see a photo from Sept 2000).

When did the store open?

There’s been some debate as to when the Brixton Body Shop opened.

In 1978 the premises were being used by John Collier tailors (see pic above), and locals have confirmed it being there in 1991, although some say it appeared as a result of post-riot investment in 1989.
