Valentine’s Day Gift Guide 2024: The Best Chocolatey Beers

Following

For Valentine’s Day, there’s nothing better than a gift of chocolate. Chocolatey beer, that is. Here’s a roundup of some deliciously chocolate-tasting beers.

Sun King Brewery Chocolate Caliente Mexicano, $20/2-pack

This barrel-aged imperial stout offers a 13.6 percent ABV. It is aged in bourbon, hot sauce and artisan small batch cinnamon whiskey barrels, giving it a rich chocolate character with pronounced yet balanced spicy heat.

Dock Street Brewing Company Prince Myshkin's Russian Imperial Stout, $20/4-pack

This stout is brewed with a large percentage of roasted and chocolate malts for depth and complexity, and it has a 9.8 percent ABV. “Bold stouts like this pair well with many of the rich foods one might enjoy at a Valentine's Day dinner, and Prince is the perfect companion to chocolate itself, whether alongside a decadent chocolate dessert or paired with a classic box of chocolates,” says Mark Russell, head brewer.

Lord Hobo Brewing Tiramisu Stout, $12.99/4-pack

This rich and flavorful stout is a collaboration between Lord Hobo Brewing and Modern Pastry, and the result is a limited edition Tiramisu Stout that pays homage to the classic Italian dessert. At 6 percent ABV, it features layers of creamy vanilla, decadent dark chocolate, and a hint of coffee that delivers the essence of tiramisu in every bite, making it perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Firestone Walker Cinnamon Dolce Nitro Stout, $10.99/6-pack

This 6 percent ABV is beautifully balanced and loaded with complementary flavors of rich chocolatey malts, cinnamon and vanilla. On top of that, the nitro format delivers an incredible velvety textures.

Enlightened Brewing Co. Prototypical Porter, $7.99/6-pack

This 5.4 percent ABV porter boasts a chocolate and cola flavor. “It’s a great choice for Valentine’s Day because we brew it with chocolate malt, and that really comes through in the taste and aroma,” says Tommy Vandervort, co-f0under. “It’s a great complement to any sweet dessert, especially chocolate desserts and chocolates themselves because the carbonation and slight acidity of the beer will cut through the richness.”

Lawson’s Finest Liquids Nitro Stout, $12.99/4-pack

This Irish style dry stout boasts a 5.4 percent ABV, as well as a chocolatey, smooth mouthfeel that comes from dense little bubbles of nitrogen that land on the tongue. It turns a delicious beer into a luxuriously creamy and sensory delight that’s perfect for Valentine’s Day.

3 Sheeps Brewing Uber Joe, $10/can

With an ABV of 14.9, this bourbon barrel aged imperial stout is available only for sale in the taproom. It’s a special offering, made with coffee, cocoa nibs and vanilla, and it pairs well with chocolate and staring deep into your special person’s eyes.

Deschutes Brewery Black Butte XXXV, $20/4-pack

To celebrate their 35th anniversary, Deschutes found inspiration in the Black Forest cake. This 11 percent ABV porter fuses together the flavors of cocoa, tart cherries, vanilla and a hint of bourbon. Another great chocolatey beer is their Black Butte XXXIV, a tiramisu version.

Stone Brewing Stone Mocha IPA, $20/4-pack

This style defying beer is definitely an IPA, but if a stout and an IPA had a baby, this would be the beer. With a 9 percent ABV, this double IPA melds the taste of an imperial IPA with mocha. With aromas of coffee, cocoa and citrus, this IPA is sure to please.

Indeed Brewing Company Coconut Macaroon Cream Ale, $10/4-pack

This is a little bit of a different spin on a chocolatey beer, as it is a cream ale. “It’s that classic combo of chocolate and coconut, but in a cream ale base, which makes it more drinkable and less overbearing than a stout or a porter,” says Ryan Bandy, chief business officer of the brewery.
