ABOUT TO START AND WHEN LIGHTNING IS NEARBY. WELL, RIGHT NOW IN LAWRENCE, POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING AN OVERNIGHT SHOOTING AND HAPPENED ON A BUSY STRETCH DOWNTOWN JUST BEFORE 2 A.M. NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT IT LEFT THE COMMUNITY CONCERNED. KMBC NINE’S PEYTON HEADLEE IS TRACKING CRIME IN LAWRENCE. IT WAS AN ARGUMENT EARLY SUNDAY MORNING OUTSIDE OF A BAR HERE ON MASS STREET THAT ENDED IN GUNFIRE, FOR IT’S A LITTLE UNSETTLING TO HEAR THINGS LIKE THAT WHEN YOU LIVE JUST AROUND THE CORNER. FOR KU STUDENTS, IT’S SHOCKING TO HEAR OF A SHOOTING AFTER A BUSY SATURDAY NIGHT DOWNTOWN. I DID SEE A BUNCH OF COPS AROUND THE TRIANGLE. IT WAS SCARY TO HEAR ABOUT THAT, KNOWING THAT WE HAVE FRIENDS WHO GO THERE SOMETIMES. LAWRENCE POLICE DESCRIBED THE SCENE AS A CHAOTIC SITUATION WITH DOZENS OF PEOPLE IN THE AREA. WHEN SHOTS WERE FIRED. POLICE SAY A WOMAN WAS PICKING UP HER BOYFRIEND FROM A BAR NEAR SEVENTH STREET AND MASSACHUSETTS AROUND 2 A.M. WHILE SHE WAS WAITING. A MAN SHE DIDN’T KNOW APPROACHED HER CAR, AND WHEN HER BOYFRIEND CAME OUT, THE TWO MEN GOT INTO AN ARGUMENT. THE UNKNOWN MAN GOT INTO A SILVER SEDAN WITH SEVERAL OTHERS THAT SEDAN THEN HIT HER BOYFRIEND WITH THEIR BUMPER, FIRED AT LEAST FIVE SHOTS, AND THEN DROVE OFF. DEFINITELY SCARY. LIKE WE SAID, THERE’S BEEN KIND OF AN UPTICK IN THE VIOLENCE LATELY. THIS ALL COMES AMID AN INCREASE OF VIOLENCE IN THE AREA. THERE HAVE NOW BEEN THREE HOMICIDES IN LAWRENCE THIS YEAR THAT MATCHES THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOMICIDES FOR ALL OF 2023. HONESTLY, I FEEL LIKE LAWRENCE IS A PRETTY SAFE PLACE, BUT THINGS HAPPEN. I FEEL LIKE THIS THE PAST FEW YEARS WHEN WE’VE BEEN HERE, I HAVEN’T HEARD MUCH LIKE THIS. OR IF THERE WERE STORIES, IT WAS THE UNCOMMON THING THAT HAPPENED. SO IT’S SCARY. THE PAST FEW WEEKS WE’VE HEARD THIS HAPPEN A FEW TIMES, AND POLICE SAID MANY OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED WERE INTOXICATED AND UNABLE OR UNWILLING TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO POLICE. STILL, THEY’RE GATHERING EVIDENCE AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. IN LAWRENCE, PEYTON HEADLEE KMBC NINE NEWS. AND AGAIN, NO ONE WAS HURT. WE C
