Vermilion Co. Animal Shelter in need of food and fosters

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The Vermilion County Animal Shelter is in desperate need of adoptions, fosters, and dog food.

Shelter officials jumped to Facebook on Monday to issue their plea for help. Earlier this month, the shelter encouraged animal lovers to adopt and foster ahead of a spring surge. Now that the season is officially here, adoptions and resources have become even more urgently needed.

They first announced that they are currently out of adult dog food, as their latest shipment has been unexpectedly delayed. The shelter encourages donations through their Amazon Wishlist. Diamond and Rachael Ray dog food brands are preferred.

There is also a big need for fosters. Officials say their stray dog population has “exploded,” filling the shelter with lost dogs, dogs in stray hold, microchipped dogs without current information, and more.

Now, the adoption floor is full, and pop-up kennels are being placed throughout the office to make more room.

“Even if it’s [fostering] for 7 days for a stray hold, or just for a weekend, it all helps,” the shelter’s Facebook post said. “We are networking animals to rescue, posting them for adoption, etc. Unfortunately this crisis is nationwide in shelters and rescues and we are no exception.”
