BEAUMONT, Texas — In efforts to revitalize Downtown, Beaumont City Councilman Mike Getz is pushing to bring a new food truck park to the heart of the city.
"Food truck parks are really popular in other parts of Texas, and we don't have one we need to," said Mike Getz.
Food trucks may soon be able to call the concrete parking lot near city hall home.
The food truck park has been the goal of Councilman Getz and the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce.
"You will not only have multiple food trucks, but you will have music and the ability to have beer and wine sold so that people can come out here and enjoy the water, have a beverage," said Getz.
If the city approves the project, the park will possibly have four to six food truck, seating areas and more for residents to enjoy.
"This is what I call low hanging fruit, this is not an expensive project," he said. "And what it will do when it comes to bringing people downtown it will definitely pay off in it's own in terms of that."
The President of the Chamber Steve Alhaneus says the next steps are changing some of city council's codes and regulations regarding food trucks.
"We can, we just need to change some of the city codes and regulations and make it easier for food trucks to operate," said Alhaneus. "You would have to do away with some of the rules that say you have to move the truck every 24 hours."
Food truck owner and operator Joshua Gilliam believes this will be an opportunity to get a wider audience.
"It would help because once you are on a location of several different food trucks, then the people that don't know about my business, they can get a chance to try my food," said Gilliam.
According to Getz the project is still an idea, but the rest of the council has been receptive and positive about the potential addition to downtown.
