Rapid City officials are notifying contractors about key revisions to the renewal dates for city-issued sewer/water and trenching licenses.
The changes follow a recent update by the State Plumbing Commission and were ratified last month by the Rapid City Council.
Previously, the state commission revised the renewal deadline for state sewer/water licenses from Dec. 31 to June 30. In response, the city’s Trenching Board proposed an ordinance to amend the city licenses’ renewal date from Feb. 28 to Aug. 31, an adjustment approved by the Council.
“By adjusting our current renewal date to Aug. 31, we better align with the state’s licensing,” said interim assistant Public Works director Shannon Truax. “Any sewer-water or trenching license that was scheduled to expire on Feb. 28 is automatically extended to Aug. 31.”

Licensees have already been informed of the significant change via email and will receive a reminder in July.
“We encourage anyone who has a license to keep their email updated with us so that they don’t miss any important notices about licensing,” Truax said.
The ordinance revision mandates that contractors engaged in sewer/water installation work within Rapid City possess current licenses from both the state and city. Synchronizing the local licensure renewal with the state’s timeline ensures that contractors have valid state licenses before the city’s renewal deadline arrives, according to city officials.
