Author visits North school

Roosevelt Avenue School in North Attleboro celebrated Reading Week in early March with Brian Lies, a Caldecott Honor-winning author. Lies showed students how to create a picture book with original artwork and gave a live drawing demonstration. “On behalf of the Roosevelt community, we would like to thank Mr. Lies for visiting our school and teaching our students the importance of making their writing come alive with vivid details,” Principal Jeannine Magliocco said. Students and staff were urged to read for at least 20 minutes a day outside of class and log it as part of a reading challenge. Classes with the most participation will be rewarded in the first week of April.

Mick Morgan’s 5K helps HESSCO

HESSCO held its 13th annual Mick Morgan’s 5K on March 16, with over 800 runners participating. The run ended at Mick Morgan’s Irish Pub in Sharon and raised enough money to provide for 700 Meals on Wheels to those in need. The first 300 runners received a free T-shirt. HESSCO serves south Norfolk County.

Military women who made history

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Greater Taunton Woman’s Club invited Lynne Stader, former president of General Federation of Women’s Club Massachusetts, to talk about women in the military at their March meeting. Stader’s presentation highlighted prominent female veterans such as Deborah Sampson, an American Revolution veteran, and Dr. Mary Walker, the only woman to receive a Medal of Honor for her work as a surgeon in the Civil War. Stader was presented with a $100 check for Project New Hope, a service organization based in Worcester dedicated to providing food and child resources to veterans and their families.
