It happened around 2:30 p.m. at the Brooks Asphalt plant on Ardmore Avenue.

The fire went out on its own, officials at the scene said, but heavy smoke could still be seen around 3 p.m.

Authorities did not initially believe anyone was hurt.

Fort Wayne Police were blocking off the entrance to the site that afternoon as the investigation continued.

The cause of the explosion has not been confirmed.
