March Madness scores takeaways: Alabama shocks No. 1 seed UNC; Illinois, UConn roll into Elite Eight

Sweet 16 action delivered a dose of chaos in the West Region Thursday night. No. 2 seed Arizona entered as a seven-point favorite against No. 6 seed Clemson, and No. 1 seed North Carolina entered as a five-point favorite against No. 4 seed Alabama. But it's called March Madness for a reason, and the event lived up to its name inside Crypto.com Arena as both underdogs emerged with surprise victories.

The Tigers outlasted the Wildcats 77-72 to reach their first Elite Eight since 1980. Not to be outdone, the Crimson Tide erased a six-point deficit over the final 8:19 to beat the Tar Heels 89-87 and reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 2004. Neither Alabama or Clemson has ever reached the Final Four, but one of the southern football powers is guaranteed to make a major hoops breakthrough on Saturday when they square off in the West Region final.

What make their runs even more surprising is how poorly each was playing entering the Big Dance. Alabama dropped four of six entering Selection Sunday and gave up 100 or more points in three of those four losses. Meanwhile, Clemson lost three of its final four games entering the NCAA Tournament with all three of those losses coming against non-NCAA Tournament teams.

But both will be dancing onward along with No. 1 seed UConn and No. 3 seed Illinois, who were also victorious as the second week of NCAA Tournament action began.

Cam Spencer shines

Cam Spencer led UConn with 18 points as the Huskies steamrolled No. 5 seed San Diego State 82-52 in a rematch of last year's national title game. San Diego State closed within 35-31 as the game approached halftime, but Spencer turned the momentum in the waning moments of the first half. He closed the half on a 5-0 flurry by himself, which included a dagger of a 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining to put UConn up 40-31. San Diego State never regained its footing as the Huskies built a commanding edge in the second half and cruised into the Elite Eight.

The East Region may have been the most difficult on paper, but the Huskies have made it look easy thus far with three victories of 17 or more points to begin their NCAA Tournament journey. Up next will be a showdown with another high-powered offensive team in Illinois.

Illinois hangs on

Illinois hung on to beat No. 2 seed Iowa State 72-69 behind 29 points from Terrence Shannon Jr. The Illini were in command at halftime with a 36-26 edge but had to fend off a furious rally from the Cyclones, who got 26 points from Curtis Jones. Ultimately, Shannon made a game-clinching steal and dunk with 24 seconds to play to keep the Illini's deepest run since 2005 alive. The second half wasn't pretty, but Illinois put enough hay in the barn during the first half to hang on for a gritty win.

Resetting the bracket

The theme of the bracket entering the Sweet 16 was chalk after no true Cinderella advanced out of the first weekend. All of a sudden it's been thrown into chaos. Three of the four worse-seeded teams won Thursday. All eight of the top-seeded teams reached the Sweet 16, but three of them are already headed home with four more Sweet 16 games still ahead on Friday.

Illinois hangs on

(3) Illinois 72, (2) Iowa State 69

Iowa State scratched and clawed to get back into the game against a high-powered Illinois team. But in the end, the star power of Terrence Shannon Jr. was too much for the Cyclones to handle. The senior wing came up with a huge steal and dunk with under 30 seconds remaining to put Illinois ahead 70-64, which all but sealed the outcome. Shannon finished with 29 points on 10 of 19 shooting even while dealing with foul trouble in the second half.

Curtis Jones scored a season-high 26 points to keep the Cyclones in the mix. Illinois also left the door open by making just 15 of 29 free throws. Ultimately, a 10-point halftime deficit was too much for the Cyclones to overcome. Illinois will take on No. 1 overall seed UConn on Thursday.

Alabama wins in a thriller

Final: (4) Alabama 89, (1) North Carolina 87

Thirteen ties, 12 lead changes, one EPIC game.

Alabama wins it in an upset in Los Angles. Final score: Alabama 89, North Carolina 87.

Bama made fewer 3-pointers than UNC -- a surprise for a team whose offense is predicated on prioritizing 3-pointers -- but the Tide just came in waves in the second half and overwhelmed the Tar Heels in a West Regional Semifinal.

Grant Nelson finished with 24 points after a huge second-half explosion where he went for 19 points. He also added five blocks, including the game-clincher. Rylan Griffen and Mark Sears combined for 37 points.

UNC star RJ Davis struggled to get going in this one but Cormac Ryan stepped up in a big way. Ryan nailed five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, while big man Armando Bacot led the team with 19 points. Davis had 16 points on just 4-of-20 shooting.

UNC becomes the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated from this year's NCAA Tournament after UConn advanced earlier in the day. No. 1 seeds Purdue and Houston play on Friday.

Illinois staying ahead

11:29 2nd: Illinois 51, Iowa State 43

Iowa State has found some offensive life in the second half, but Illinois is still keeping the Cyclones at arm's length. Terrence Shannon Jr. is up to 20 points for the Illini, who led by as much as 13 at one point in the first half. ISU struggled offensively in the first half and is still shooting just 37.2% from the floor but has found a way to stay in this game behind the scoring of Keshon Gilbert and Curtis Jones.

Alabama hanging in

8:10 left: North Carolina 70, Alabama 67

Alabama forward Nick Pringle is back on the bench and probable to return after exiting and heading to the locker room. The 6-foot-9 senior has been dealing with a foot injury recently. He has scored only two points but has been a force on the glass with eight rebounds in a hotly contested game. The Crimson Tide are hanging around as North Carolina is shooting just 23.1% from the floor in the second half.

Illinois in strong position

Half: Illinois 36, Iowa State 26

Illinois did a great job defensively in the first half, limiting Iowa State to 29% shooting. Terrence Shannon Jr. led the Illini with 16 points while Curtis Jones paced the Cyclones with 13 off the bench. ISU thrives off forcing turnovers and converting those into points. But Illinois did a good job of taking care of the basketball in the first half, committing just five turnovers. Of note: Illinois hit just 7 of 16 free throws in the first half. Iowa State has some foul trouble, but the Illini have yet to make ISU pay for it at the stripe.

Illini pacing ISU early

U8 timeout: Illinois 21, Iowa State 12

In a battle between the No. 1 offense (Illinois) and the No. 1 defense (Iowa State), it's been the Illini by a sizable margin early in this one. Illinois has led the whole way so far and had a 10-point advantage at one point. Terrence Shannon Jr. has nearly outscored the Cyclones as a team, as he's up to 11 points at the U8 timeout break. Iowa State just 4 of 16 shooting and has not found any type of rhythm on offense.

UNC takes lead into half

Halftime: North Carolina 54, Alabama 46

Alabama's uptempo offense is keeping things close against No. 1 seed North Carolina. UNC has thus far opted to play the track meet game with the Tide and has the edge at the break, but curious to see if it comes out with a different plan in the second half. Alabama is getting to its spots on offense and looks comfortable playing this style.

Rylan Griffen has been huge for the Tide with 15 at the half and Mark Sears already up to 14. It's been Cormac Ryan  who has stood out the most thus far for UNC with four 3s in the first half and a tide-stemming charge drawn at the top of the key. RJ Davis hasn't gotten going but Ryan's deep threat and shot-making has opened this game up. He has 12. Harrison Ingram also has 12 points to keep the Heels on top at the break.

Alabama running and gunning

Alabama 32, UNC 31

North Carolina jumped on Alabama early but Bama's come back swinging with some serious punches down the stretch of the first half to retake the lead. Mark Sears has been carrying the Tide and he's already up to 12 points. Elliot Cadeau has been bigger-than-expected so far for the Heels with a team-high 8 points. RJ Davis held to just 2 points on 1 of 4 shooting so far.

UNC off and running

U12: North Carolina 21, Alabama 17

North Carolina is off and running in Los Angeles. The Tar Heels are shooting 57% to start, and even Elliot Cadeau is part of the action. The pass-first freshman point guard has five early points and hit his first 3-point attempt. That's big for UNC when he can keep the opposing defense honest. As expected, the pace is high and the scoring is up. Mark Sears and Grant Nelson have 5 apiece in the early going for Alabama. The winner will get No. 6 seed Clemson in the Elite Eight.

Expert pick for Illinois-Iowa State

The epic clash of the nation's best offense against the nation's best defense will go the way of the bucket-getters. Iowa State's aggressive defensive pressure sometimes leaves open looks, and that's where Illinois can make them pay. The Fighting Illini have enough dangerous shooters to do that and should win an instant classic.  Pick: Illinois +1.5 -- Chip Patterson

UConn cruises

Final: (1) UConn 82, (5) San Diego State 52

UConn turned on the jets in the second half and pulled away from San Diego State in a rematch of the 2023 national championship game for a dominant win in the Sweet 16 on Thursday. The Aztecs were within 35-31 late in the first half before Cam Spencer closed on a scoring flurry to send the Huskies into the locker room with momentum. Stephon Castle and Hasaan Diarra both each reached double-digits in the second half alone.

The Huskies will get either Illinois or Iowa State in the Elite Eight as their national title defense rolls on in convincing fashion. Coach Dan Hurley and this UConn team keep moving closer to history, as they're now three wins away from repeating as national champions -- a feat that has not been accomplished since Billy Donovan and those Florida teams back in 2006-07.

Bama's top 3-point shooter out vs. UNC

Alabama and its high-octane offense will be without its best outside shooting weapon tonight as Latrell Wrightsell, who suffered a head injury in the first half of the second-round game vs. Grand Canyon, is dressed in sweats and will reportedly miss tonight's action. Wrightsell, a Cal State Fullerton transfer, is shooting a career-best 44.3% from 3-point range, which is best among regular rotation players for the Crimson Tide. Could be significant for the Tide, whose offense is among the most 3-point heavy in all of college basketball.

Clemson upsets Arizona in Sweet 16

FINAL: (6) Clemson 77, (2) Arizona 72

Clemson is headed to the Elite Eight for the second time in program history and first time since 1980 (!!!) after shocking No. 2 seed Arizona in the Sweet 16. This was an upset by betting odds only as the Tigers jumped out early and controlled the game most of the way; they trailed just 20 total seconds throughout the contest.

Chase Hunter had a huge and-1 with 25.7 seconds remaining to put Clemson up five. Then his younger brother, Dillon Hunter, had another and-1 with 9.8 seconds remaining to again go up by five -- which turned out to be the final margin.

The elder Hunter snapped his streak of two straight 20-point games, but Chase still had a team-high 18 points in the win. PJ Hall had 17 points and was huge in the second half to help neutralize the threat of Arizona's Oumar Ballo.

Clemson moves onto the Elite Eight where it will play either Alabama or North Carolina on Saturday.

Expert pick for Alabama-North Carolina

Alabama and its high-flying offense could -- and maybe will -- keep pace with North Carolina and its veteran-heavy, balanced attack. But the Tar Heels have been as consistent as any all season on defense and have the horses to go blow for blow with the mighty Crimson Tide offense. UNC just has too much firepower and balance here, so I'll lay the five with the Heels. Pick: North Carolina -5 -- Kyle Boone

Clemson zone has 'Zona shook

We are nearly 16 minutes deep in the second half and No. 2 seed Arizona JUST hit its first 3-point attempt of the half. It was 1 of 14 (!!!) before Jaden Bradley finally broke the cold streak. Clemson's thrown a zone at 'Zona and dared them to make shots from distance, and the Wildcats have shockingly had no answers even as they keep this tight. Still a one-possession game with just a few minutes remaining.

UConn pulling away

11:39 left: UConn 55, SDSU 39

UConn is doing what UConn does and beginning to pull away. The Huskies are crushing it on the glass and have three players in double figures. Stephon Castle has been in his bag during the second half with eight points after the break. Jaedon LeDee is up to 17 points for SDSU. But, as expected, he's not getting quite enough help.

Clemson keeping Arizona sweating

Every time Arizona has mounted a little run in this second half, Clemson has seemingly found a way to answer. Clemson forward Ian Schieffelin with a particularly big couple minutes making shots from both inside and out as the Tigers lead 63-58 at the U8 timeout. Chase Hunter, who is coming off consecutive 20-point outings, has also made a couple big shots to keep the Tigers out in front.

Arizona's done a nice job of keeping the pressure on but it has struggled to keep Clemson off the boards and hasn't provided enough resistance defensively. Jaden Bradley and Caleb Love have combined for 15 in this second half so far, though, with all eight of Bradley's points in this half coming at the charity stripe.

Arizona making a comeback

Early 2H: (6) Clemson 43, (2) Arizona 43

Here comes the Wildcats. Arizona is on a 8-0 run over the last 49 seconds thanks to an And-1 by star guard Caleb Love. The Wildcats are building momentum and cutting into the deficit by forcing turnovers and running in transition. Arizona is one of the fastest teams in the country, and this style of basketball favors the No. 2 seed.

SDSU hanging around

Half: (1) UConn 40, (5) San Diego State 31

In a rematch of last year's national championship game, UConn mashed the gas pedal out of the gate while opening up a 27-16 lead. The Aztecs worked their way back in it, though, trailing just 35-31 with two minutes left in the half.

Cam Spencer then went on a 5-0 run by himself to make it 40-31 at the break. He hit a dagger 3 with 21 seconds left to give UConn all the momentum entering the half. That's a killer for the Aztecs, who fought so hard to get back within striking distance.

The Huskies are aiming to become the first repeat national champs since Florida in 2006-07, and they're 20 minutes away from moving one step closer with a return trip to the Elite Eight if they can hold off the Aztecs the rest of the way.

Arizona builds momentum heading into halftime

HALF: (6) Clemson 39, (2) Arizona 31

Clemson led by as many as 13 points midway through the first half thanks to a balanced scoring attack from Chauncey Wiggins, Chase Hunter, Ian Schieffelin and PJ Hall. The Tigers scored 11 points off eight turnovers in the opening frame.

The Wildcats rank No. 3 in the country in scoring offense, but they were limited to 31 points on 13-of-32 shooting.  It took nearly four minutes and six missed shots before they finally got on the scoreboard. Clemson is shooting 16 of 30 from the floor and connected on five 3-pointers.

The key to Arizona's fast-paced offense revolves around star guard Caleb Love, who shot 2 of 9 in the first half. Love will have to shoot the ball more efficiently for the Wildcats to advance to the Elite Eight. Clemson is seeking its first Elite Eight appearance since 1980.

UConn in machine mode

U12 timeout: UConn 27, SDSU 18

Jaedon LeDee started HOT for San Diego State with nine points in the first five minutes. He's up to 12 for the game and is showing his chops as a perimeter threat in addition to his interior prowess. But UConn is dictating the pace and racking up points at a torrent pace. Alex Karaban is already 2 of 2 from deep. As a team, the Huskies are 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. Keeping up is going to be a struggle for the Aztecs, who prefer a slower pace. UConn is in machine mode here early, despite LeDee's best efforts.

Clemson extends lead

MID 1H: (6) Clemson 27, (2) Arizona 14

It's been all Clemson through the first 13 minutes of game action. The Tigers are shooting 11 of 19 from the field — including an impressive 5 of 7 from distance — and lead by 13 points over No. 2 seed Arizona. Clemson forward Chauncey Wiggins leads all scorers with eight points. Arizona has as many turnovers (six) as made field goals six.

Slow start for Arizona

MID 1H: (6) Clemson 16, (2) Arizona 6

The Wildcats are off to a rough start shooting the ball. Arizona is 2 of 13 from the field, and they missed its first six shots before getting on the board nearly four minutes in. Clemson is shooting an impressive 7 of 13 from the field, and forward RJ Godfrey leads all scorers with five points.

Can Alabama get back to the Elite Eight?

When the Crimson Tide takes the floor against No. 1 seed North Carolina Thursday, it will mark its third appearance in the Sweet 16 during Nate Oats' five-year tenure. Outside of 2020, when the event was canceled due to COVID-19, Alabama has reached the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons with Oats at the helm. It's been a meteoric rise for a program that had been to the Big Dance just twice in the 13 years before Oats took the job.

Reseeding the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 teams from UConn to NC State

On paper, the tournament has been kind of chalky so far. This is just the fifth time since 1979 that every No. 1 seed and No. 2 seed have made the Sweet 16 (1989, 1995, 2009, 2019). In that collection of wins were plenty of lopsided results, and the tournament as a whole has already matched the record for 25-point wins (11, 1993). But the opening weekend also saw No. 1 Houston pushed to overtime and narrow four-point wins for No. 2 Tennessee and No. 2 Marquette. Right now, the closest thing we have to a Cinderella is the magical run of No. 11 NC State, which needed seven games in 12 days to claim an automatic bid to the tournament and march on to the program's first Sweet 16 since 2015.
