Dickerson leaves USC Upstate, will return to Ohio State as an associate head coach

The Denmark-Olar product returns to Columbus where he spent seven seasons as an assistant on the Ohio State staff

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — USC Upstate men’s head basketball coach Dave Dickerson has resigned from his position in the Upstate and is returning to Ohio State as associate head coach. 

The Denmar-Olar graduate returns to the program where he spent seven seasons on the Thad Matta staff, the last six as associate head coach.

Dickerson left Ohio Statein April of 2018 to take over the USC Upstate program. He went 65-117 in his six-year tenure and he led the Spartans to the semifinals of the Big South Conference men's basketball tournament in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Associate head coach Andrew Garcia will serve as interim head coach as a national search for the next head coach has begun.

Dickerson's first stop at Ohio State was preceeded by a five-year stop in New Orleans as the head coach at Tulane.

The former Maryland forward started his coaching career in 1990 as an assistant at Gardner-Webb. He has also been an assistant at James Madison, Radford and Maryland.
