Homeowners could see the value of their properties fall by up to 30 per cent as the result of a scheme to erect 70 miles of pylons, experts have warned.

The plan to install two substations and the chain of 190ft pylons stretching from the west of Aberdeen to the north of Dundee, as part of a £20 billion upgrade, has been condemned by campaigners who fear it will spoil the countryside.

Ian Thornton-Kemsley, of the property consultants Galbraith, said the impact of the Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) scheme threatens to cost property owners collectively “£1 million a mile” on the value of their homes.
