Announcements
UNCG, in alignment with other institutions in the UNC System and many nationally, has chosen to extend the commitment deadline for its admitted first-year students to May 15. This decision was made in response to the late federal rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid and subsequent nationwide delays in processing students’ financial aid awards.
Traditionally, National College Decision Day falls on May 1. However, without financial aid information, students and families are having a hard time assessing their college choices.
Students are encouraged to mark May 15 on their calendars as the new commitment deadline and to take actions like securing housing and orientation in the meantime. UNCG’s Office of Admissions staff is available to address any questions or concerns students and families may have. The university will continue to keep incoming students closely informed of all developments leading up to the commitment deadline.

Middle and high school students in the Piedmont region will have an opportunity to explore careers in the growing field of statistics and data science.
The free event, known as Florence Nightingale Day and open to students 13 and older, will take place from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. April 20 in Manchester Hall at Wake Forest University.
The goal of the program is to engage kids, promote future career opportunities, and celebrate the contributions of women to these fields. Although best known as a pioneer in nursing, Nightingale also had a significant impact on the use of statistics to improve health outcomes.
The day is filled with lots of hands-on activities, including a catapult that students will use to explore experimental design concepts. To learn about machine learning, kids will build a classification algorithm of cats and dogs. These types of exercises help develop valuable analytical and problem-solving skills.

Grants
Being a parent and a college student at the same time is difficult. UNCG’s Childcare Education Program recently received a transformative grant of $224,000 to provide childcare to student parents creating a new opportunity for these students to succeed while pursuing a degree and raising a family.
The program goes beyond conventional childcare services and provides parenting programs, financial literacy workshops and invaluable resources aimed at nurturing student parents’ academic success.
First-year doctoral student at UNCG, Jennifer Aikey, describes the program as “life-changing” as she was able to go back to school knowing her daughter was cared for. With its recent grant infusion, the program is set to make an even greater impact.
Honors
Minerva, the creative concentration in advertising at The University of Alabama, has selected its 10th cohort. The students, including Kendall Harris of Greensboro, selected for the two-year concentration work in teams as art directors and copywriters to build competitive and compelling portfolios while earning their undergraduate or graduate degree in advertising.
New cohorts are selected each spring and Minerva accepts no more than 25 students. The specialized curriculum produces award-winning students, and its alumni currently work at some of the world’s most creative and well-respected advertising agencies.
