TONIGHT & TUESDAY - FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAYS: As of Monday afternoon, snow is still push through the Red River Valley and Lakes Country, but the Devils Lake Basin is not seeing any snow. Wind gusts above 35 mph are also pushing through southeastern ND and parts of SD and MN. The combination of snow and wind is leading to low visibility and slick roads, which will impact travel conditions this evening.

Overnight, the snow will end in the Red River Valley, but snow showers will continue in Lakes Country. All the while, wind gusts will still be above 30 mph across southeast North Dakota and MN, affecting visibility and travel conditions. Then during the morning hours, more snow will lift into Central MN, leading to more snow accumulations. By Tuesday afternoon, any leftover snow will move out of Minnesota altogether, leaving behind overcast skies. However, wind gusts at or above 40 mph will still impact our region until Tuesday night, blowing around any snow on the ground. On top of the low visibility, drifting will also occur, which means more travel disruptions and a prolonged response and recovery time.

Thankfully winds will settle down Tuesday night, and by Wednesday, sunnier, less windy conditions will return.

To prep for this system, make sure to have a winter storm kit in your car, such as a shovel, salt and cat litter, some high caloric food and water, and even some towing cables and jumper cables. Make sure that your car’s tires are in good shape and that you have a full tank of gas.

EXTENDED FORECAST:

WEDNESDAY: The middle of next week will be mostly sunny and dry, but morning lows will be in the single digits to low teens, so you’ll want a heavy coat for the morning hours. Afternoon highs will only be in the upper-20s.

THURSDAY - SUNDAY: Thursday is looking mostly clear and sunny, but between Friday and Sunday, a series of disturbances will bring isolated rain/snow chances to North Dakota and Minnesota. So while precipitation chances will be low, don’t be surprised if you see a few sprinkles. Aside from that, expect cloudy skies and highs in the 30s to low-40s.
