Glee star Amber Riley has opened up about how she maintained her mental health while starring on the hit Fox series as it became a pop culture phenomenon. According to the actress, she and her cast mates got through it together after “a lot of trauma bonding.”

During a recent appearance on Today, Riley candidly spoke on how she dealt with her meteoric rise to fame after the show premiered in 2009.

“I don’t think that I coped that well, being that young. People have to understand I was young, it was my first time being on television and it was a phenomenon,” she said, adding that they all got “so much attention” once the show became a big deal.

“I think we really relied on one another — a lot of trauma bonding,” she continued with a laugh. “We relied on one another and I think us being a family really did help because the only ones that kind of understood was really one another. I was around them more than my own family.”

Riley added that her mental health became more of a priority for her after the show ended.

“Hollywood is a very crazy place, as we all know,” she said. “I wouldn’t say that I let it slip, I didn’t know that I needed to maintain it. Therapy… changed my life.”

The actress also spoke on her experience reuniting with her co-stars to record a new single for charity in honor of their late castmate, Naya Rivera, who died at age 33 in 2020 after she went out boating with her young son.

“It was amazing. That’s my family,” Riley shared. “We always wanna honor her every single year by giving back to the Alexandria House, which is the organization that she always raised money for and was really close to her heart.”
