Plano City Hall is inviting the public to an open house on Wednesday, April 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 to discuss proposed water and sewer rate increases. City Hall is at 17 E. Main Street in downtown Plano.

Currently, an increase of 5 percent is being proposed for the sewer rate and an increase of 15 percent is being proposed for the water rate. Since the two increases are applied separately, that amounts to a $1.38 increase in the base sewer rate of $27.64 and a $2.52 increase in the base water rate of $16.83. People are billed by every thousand gallons after the first 2,000.

Mayor Mike Rennels says the increase is needed to keep the system operating.

The first rate hike in over ten years happened last year. The city council has said that it would reevaluate the rates each year.

Seniors in town can contact city hall for an application receive the reduced senior rate.

The topic was talked about at the Plano City Council Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story said that residents are billed by the gallon after the base 2,000. It has been clarified to say that people are billed per every 1,000 gallons of water used.
