Masters Survey 2024: Kevin Kisner, Jason Day, Stewart Cink on the small attention to detail thing Augusta National does that impresses them most

Augusta National Golf Club usually gets the big things right but it is the attention to detail that separates greatness from being the absolute best.

Augusta National’s attention to detail is legendary. Have you ever seen a piece of litter on the course? Never! Gary Player says he’s never seen a weed on the property — and if you did the course superintendent likely would be dismissed from his job. Jason Day once saw them washing the glass in the lanterns and Kevin Kisner says he’s seen the mark from a courtesy hitting the curb vanish overnight. Stewart Cink says that’s nothing — he’s witnessed giant trees be downed and the next day it looks as if the tree was never there. Augusta National knows how to handle all the little things and the big things take care of themselves. Here are the answers to what’s the small attention to detail thing Augusta National does that impresses you most?

Every divot gets replaced the next day by a freshly cut patch of grass.

Krispy Kreme donuts in the locker room is a nice touch.

On 8, on the sides of the green, they flatten the first foot of fringe so you can’t use the opposite sides if you’re short-sided. There’s some little stuff like that which is unbelievable that they do.

Every year they change things and we’ll never know it. They’re that good.

You will never, ever find a weed at Augusta National. I’m sure the greenskeeper would be fired if anyone found a weed.

The locker room guys remember your name. I haven’t played that many times. They seem to know me and everybody.

Everything is perfect down to the cleaning of the lamp posts. No one takes notice of the lamp posts, right, but one time I walked past a guy taking out the glass and cleaning it, both sides and putting it back. People wouldn’t notice it. But next time you go there, look at the lamp posts. The place is unbelievable.

Their app is far and away the greatest in golf. It’s insane.

When you hit the curb with your truck, they have it repainted the next day. I’ve done that.

The conditioning of the course but just how well everything is thought out.

Everything. There isn’t one thing they do that doesn’t impress me.

Covering the sprinkler heads around the green with turfs of grass and you can’t even find the seams. I don’t know if it is stitched in but you can’t find the seams. It’s a nice touch.

They do everything so perfectly now. The practice facility now is five-star quality.

During practice round days, they are measuring where the players are hitting from. It’s not just the tournament days and no one else does that.

The staff remembers what you ordered to eat or random stuff about what you like that you wouldn’t expect them to know.

What impresses me most is when there’s damage from a storm overnight, you never know it happened. Tree falls down and you never knew it was there.

Tony Finau

The pinestraw. It’s just the right amount so you get a suspect lie sometimes. That and the consistency of the bunkers. It’s not always like that on Tour.

The sand type. It’s really hard to spin it off there. You have to get very close to the ball but it’s hard when there’s so much sand in there. If you catch a little too much sand, the ball won’t spin at all. I also like the way the grass is quite long but it is laying down and always mowed into.

Will Zalatoris

The architecture of the fringes. They are always tilted in directions where if you’re chipping, it’s really hard. Back of 15, if the pin is on the left side, the fringe points back towards the front of the green towards the water and if your chip hits the fringe it can easily go in the water. On the back of 4, if you hit it long left the fringe goes away from the grain and if you land it on the fringe you won’t even get it on the green.

One of the best compliments I can give a place is it is predictable because of how pure it is. Good shots are rewarded and bad shots are punished.
