Police: Gun goes off when man trips while attempting to flee from Des Moines officers
A 65-year-old man is facing felony drug and firearm charges after an incident late Wednesday morning near Euclid and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway that involved a gun going off.
According to the Des Moines Police Department, officers were dispatched to 2525 Clarkson Avenue to investigate a reported assault with a weapon. The caller reported that the suspect had displayed a handgun during a dispute. The caller was able to give dispatchers a detailed description of the suspect and information on his direction of travel.
When an officer arrived shortly before 11:30 a.m., the suspect, later identified as Willie Shorter Jr., was walking in the 2500 block of Post Street and began to run away when the officer attempted to make contact.
Shorter ran through the parking lot in the 3400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway when he tripped and fell and the officer heard a gunshot. There were no injuries as a result of gunfire.
An officer tried to physically restrain Shorter, who struggled and resisted. A bystander and other officers assisted in securing Shorter in handcuffs.
Police say Shorter had a .32 caliber revolver and evidence indicated it had been fired. Police also found methamphetamine packaged for distribution in Shorter’s possession.
Shorter has been charged with:
- Felon in possession of a firearm, a Class D felony
- Assault with a weapon, aggravated misdemeanor
- Interference with official acts with a firearm, Class D felony
- Possession with intent to deliver, Class B felony
- Drug tax stamp violation, Class D felony
Shorter sustained minor injuries from his fall. He is being booked in the Polk County Jail.
