As the chequered flag flew Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) ended the opening MotoGP™ session fastest. The eight-time World Champion was ahead of Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) who was 0.165s behind after setting a 1:40.649 to put him in second position. Making it three manufacturers inside the top three was South African Brad Binder who ended the session in third, ahead of his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate, Jack Miller. Rounding out the top five was Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac Racing).

Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Ducati) continues his title charge in Portugal after finishing in sixth ahead of Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™). Home hero Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse Racing) was in eighth, ahead of Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) and Repsol Honda Team’s Joan Mir who rounded out the top 10.
Riders began to push in the tricky conditions, with Martin having a small save at turn three – briefly losing the front. The lap times tumbled throughout the session, with a mix of manufacturers taking the top spot throughout the 45 minutes.
