Jeremy Vine asked his viewers on Wednesday whether they thought Twitter should be "shut down" as Kate Middleton conspiracies continue to multiply.

Prince William and Kate Middleton's marriage has been a hot topic on social media over recent weeks, with speculations regarding the future Queen of England's whereabouts following her unspecified abdominal surgery in January. Conspiracy theories cranked up a notch earlier this month, when Kensington Palace was forced to admit a picture shared on William and Kate's joint Instagram account had been doctored.

Despite Kate seemingly being spotted visiting a farm shop in Windsor over the weekend, conspiracy theories continue to swirl online. Posing a question to his guests and viewers, Vine said: "This will sound crazy. But China does it... we've got to now take control of Twitter and shut it down for the time being."

"I don't think we should take control of Twitter and shut it down," guest journalist Jenny Kleeman said. "I do think we should perhaps ask the social media companies to stop promoting these conspiracy theories."

Later, speaking to someone called Kayleigh, Vine asked: "Do you think social media companies need to take this stuff down? What do you think Kayleigh?" Kayleigh replied: "I think social media is a weird place but Kensington Palace really hasn't helped itself with this, from the initial statement to the doctored image. People keep saying [the picture] was edited - it's been doctored, which is a completely different thing than a simple edit."

After Vine clarified Kayleigh was referring to Kate and William's Mother's Day gaffe, not their reported outing in Windsor over the weekend, Kayleigh continued. "They haven't helped themselves," she reiterated. "In terms of social media conspiracies, it's interesting that we're giving Kate so much grace and 'oh lets leave her alone' when there was another princess who had to flee the country due to abuse."

"We're talking about Princess Meghan?" Vine then asked the caller, who replied: "Yes." Vine then bluntly cut off the caller, saying "Ok. Thank you" and swiftly moved on to another caller, Sarah from Leicester. The awkward moment has been gaining traction on Twitter, which remains turned on.

"Why does this show never go after Kate the way it goes after Meghan? #JeremyVine," one asked, as another added: "Jeremy vine blatantly contributes to the double standards in reporting when it comes to Meghan and Kate. The caller is right, much worse has happened, and continues to happen to Meghan. If you are going to call out conspiracy theories about Kate you must call out conspiracy theories about Meghan as well."
