Missouri Teen in Critical Condition with Brain Injuries After Fight that Went Viral on Social Media

15-year-old Kaylee Gain is fighting a brain bleed following a fight that broke out near a St. Louis County high school on Friday

A Missouri teenager is fighting for her life after she allegedly sustained brain injuries in a fight near a St. Louis County high school.

According to the local station KSDK, 15-year-old Kaylee Gain has been hospitalized since the violent brawl on Friday with major brain bleeding and swelling. The girl’s family has started a GoFundMe campaign to pay for her medical needs, and wrote that the family’s life was “shattered when their only daughter was assaulted outside of a North County high school.”

“She was left alone on the ground to convulse before EMTs arrived on the scene," her family alleges in the fundraiser. "She was admitted to one of the local hospitals in Saint Louis with a skull fracture and frontal lobe damage.”

Gain is in critical condition, the family adds, and says she is “fighting hard to stay alive and heal but this is only the beginning of a very uphill battle for Kaylee and her family.”

“Her mother and father are staying by her side night and day hoping to bring her back to the Kaylee they know and love,” the GoFundMe, which has raised more than $215,000 of its $500,000 goal thus far, states. “Your support would help with lost wages and piling up medical bills due to intensive care treatment.”

According to St. Louis County police, the fight took place on Norgate and Claudine drives just blocks away from Hazelwood East High School, where several of the students involved in the brawl attend school, per the NBC affiliate.

A video of the fight went viral on social media and circulated on outlets such as TMZ hours after it happened. The footage shows a girl having her head slammed into the ground several times by another girl. Police were called shortly after and Gain was immediately transferred to a local hospital.

On Saturday, police stated that a 15-year-old suspect was arrested and is now being held by St. Louis County Family Court on assault charges, but their name will not be released due to their age.

The New York Daily News reported that the assailant in the attack may be charged as an adult, but John O'Sullivan with the St. Louis County Courts told KSDK that it’s too early to know.

The Hazelwood School District issued a statement via Facebook on Saturday, writing that it will offer emotional and crisis support to students in need.

“It is a tragedy anytime children are hurt. Bullying and fighting in the community is an issue for which we all need to take ownership and work towards a resolution for the sake of our children,” it read.

This isn’t the only violent incident for St. Louis County students in the past week. On Tuesday, 14-year-old Justin Brooks died after being stabbed just minutes after Jennings Junior High School dismissed for the day, the Kansas City Star reported.

The Jennings School District released a statement following the deadly attack, local station KMOV reported.

“Unfortunately, we lost our JSD student. Please keep our families in your prayers during this time,” the school district stated. “We will be on-site tomorrow at the junior high with members of the crisis team to support the students, staff and family during this incredibly difficult time.”

St. Louis County police do not believe the stabbing was random and have not made any arrests as of Wednesday, according to the Star.
