The National Weather Service at Wakefield has issued a flood watch for Hampton Roads as the region is expected to get at least a few inches of rain beginning overnight Wednesday and continuing into Thursday evening.

An area of low pressure is predicted to lift across the area Wednesday night and into Thursday, bringing rainfall that could be heavy at times, according to the weather service. Estimates have Norfolk receiving 3-4 inches of rain, and Peninsula communities getting close to 2-3.

Meteorologists warn that “nuisance to minor tidal flooding” will continue into Thursday’s early high tide cycle over the upper Chesapeake Bay.

The Flood Watch covers much of southeastern Virginia and northeast North Carolina. Forecasters said the additional rainfall could result in minor flooding, especially in urban or flood-prone areas, as well as elevated river levels later this week.
