In the early 1970s, I attempted a college education. I had some money saved and worked two jobs to make ends meet, but after my first year, it became clear that it was not going to work.
There was a new option, government-backed student loans. I looked at this avenue and decided I did not know where the money to repay the loan would come from. I left school and took up a trade.
I would have preferred to spend my life in a climate-controlled electronics lab working as an engineer rather than standing under hot, leaky cars in an automotive shop, but I still feel it was the best choice for me. A debt-free career.
The key to repaying a student loan is to make certain that you acquire job skills that are marketable; at a pay rate that ensures you can repay them.
I view the student loan forgiveness initiative as an insult to those who do not borrow money without knowing how it will be paid back. It is a bald-faced attempt to buy votes worthy of that Democratic Party organization “Tammany Hall” and is just as fraught with greed and corruption.
